No the air bus can not fly the OPD. Read the lengthy page long comm update from standards. Highlights: 10 ASAP reports, "exceeded capability of the FMS", a CAUTION.

The tail scrape was a training failure. If nothing else to get the word out.

An now you yourself say the QNH/QFE battle will have a fourth iteration.

1% is the problem but its not the pilots its management and training gurus with no flying sense.

Just read the Comm Update - what is says to me is - Fly the aircraft!!! Most of the fixes mentioned are common to all a/c!

You can't just sit back and expect it to do everything for you!

The rest of the fleet has to do the same thing, maybe to just less extent, if it isn't doing what it is supposed to do - make it do what it should be doing!

And, the big split between V1 and Vr - sounds like complacency bit a few people. You got used to it always be close and when it isn't someone screwed up. It can happen to all of us but I bet if you go back and recall your training they didn't tell you to say V1 and Vr in the same breath.

QNH/QFE - that was a problem for the "domestic divas".

I agree, the recent note to 75 guys about the runway closure at Newark was completely superfluous. Those guys are pilots, they don't need spoon feeding.

UNATTENDED! That relates to our dusty personal effects in the cubicles outside AOC, that are only dusty because we have no lockers and mother nature tends to swirl dust every now and then. They (MGT) removed our stuff first then thought maybe an FCIF might be appropriate. YGBFSM! Who is running this place?

This is why I think there should have been a better training program attached to the new flap settings. I, and many, starting saying "split" when briefing the performance data and this was usually good enough to bring focused attention to the split.
It was a single digit split (~8 knots). The PM called "V1Rotate" and the PF did it. I've seen those type splits out of BUR or SNA. If you speak with the C on the above flight, he doesn't blame 15/0.

If by "training failure" you mean failure to train, you are correct. There was zero training given. We had a blog entry. We had an FCIF. Then we had a tail "scrape" -- not a tail STRIKE, mind you, just a tail SCRAPE.

It was much more than a split V1/VR issue. It was a pitch sensitivity issue related to a takeoff flap configuration which was only trained for Windshear profiles, where the Captain always made the takeoff. In other words, FOs had never, and I mean that in it's purest form, NEVER practiced a take-off with that pitch-sensitive flap setting.

The line pilot always takes the fall, but the beginning of the accident sequence was an MBO bonus hungry manager looking for a way to squeeze an extra 30 lbs of Jet A out of a takeoff. Penny wise, pound foolish.

UN-wise.

Thank you for your explanation Captain. One last question before we decide on your future here at FDX do you consider any of this to be our fault?

I have never seen anyone use QFE, Domestic or International. Where are we supposed to set that? Now, if you meant QNE then that is a different story........just sayin.

Obviously you have never flown to Almaty

It was a typo, because I just copied what skeebo2 had in his post but I think everyone understood what it was about.

Thats what I figured.....just found a little humor in a rant including the words "Domestic Divas" and then using QFE instead of QNE.

You are right I missed the Almaty train!! I have heard QFE broadcast in many different locations, just never seen anyone use it!

Cheers....
