UPS Furlough Over
#72
Well, this is my fifth airline including a commuter, a "legacy" (USAir in the late 80's), two non-Scheds while on furlough from USAir and UPS.
I think I can say a few things with confidence:
This is the best job I've ever had, worst people I've ever worked for (and I flew for Kalitta).
The pay and benefits are as good as anywhere else.
Upper management is a bunch of boot licking lackies trying to please a Gordon Gekko who couldn't be a pimp in a lumber camp.
I'm past my career V1, so it isn't as much an issue to me as others.
Having been a member of four unions (including ALPA and Teamsters) IPA is the best of the best.
There is much room for improvement.
Some are compelled to constantly wring their hands and have anxiety attacks, while others deep fry themselves in denial....both based on insecurities, fear and anger.
Anything can truly happen, 99% of which we have ABSOLUTELY NO CONTROL OVER.
Nobody has the perfect flying job.
Me...I have found a way to deal with a lot of it by creating a new cereal box religion, of which I am the high priest...Expectation Zero.
Everyday when I go to work, I assume UPS will hand me a broken/maybe illegal jet, the catering will suck and maybe make me sick, we'll be delayed for really lame reasons running me out to max duty, everybody around me (except IPA pilots) will try to blame it all I me and our CEO will screw something else up that may have me saying "Hi, I'm Sideshow Bob, welcome to Walmart."
So....
If any or all that happens, I shrug my shoulders, pat myself on the back for being right and have a drink.
If little or none of it happens I'm pleasantly surprised, count it a good day and try not to make my crew want to slit their wrists by flying with me.
Either way thanks to Expectation Zero UPS won't **** in my Rice Krispies....unless I let them.

For those of us who are going to apply no matter what you guys put on here, has anyone heard any possible dates, numbers, applying thru ups careers website or switching to an outside site like it seems almost every major has? As an educated guess, you'd think they would like to start getting new guys in class no latter than September in order to have a few fresh reserves to beat up on starting late November. I have my few connections but 3 out of 4 didn't even know they had recalled the last few guys. Thanks for any positive info anybody has!
As for the rest of you, you should hope I don't fly with you as an FO one day because one thing I don't put up with no matter how senior someone is, is stupidity and complaining. Didn't put up with it as a new hire regional FO, and took some heat for it, but low and behold chief pilot always had my back. If you don't like it go somewhere else and let me move up a number. I always support drinking, smoking and unhealthy behavior in anyone senior to me!!!!!!!

Serious question. This is the only airline job I've had. That came after some pretty crappy deployments in the USAF. Maybe this job does suck and all I have to compare it to is active duty? They left in droves back in the 90s, which included my good buddy jetjok. The stories from those times are utterly amazing at how terrible the job was. Will we see a repeat? American has some unbelievably high mandatory retirements coming up whereas we are in double digits for the foreseeable future.

I'll just add that living in SDF and bidding reserve is an entirely different experience than anything in ANC.
The two things in this board that are asinine;
1. When someone says "if you hate the job, then quit."
2. When someone counters with "You should get your application in for management."
Both are substitutes to a logical arguments.
