FedEx Jumpseat questions
I have searched this forum but can't find specifically what I am looking for. I have also called the FedEx jumpseat # and spoke with Lisa who was so rude and unprofessional that after a couple of innocent questions I just said "thank you" and hung up. So.....
Q: Can I list for the jumpseat all the way through to my destination (through Memphis) 24 hours in advance or do I have to wait until the Memphis flight to my destination is within 24 hours?
Q: How many jumpseats on the MD11? If anyone want to spend the time telling me the number of jumpseats on the other planes as well that would be appreciated.
Q: I am confused about priority. I hear that once you reserve the jumpseat it is yours, but I would expect that another FedEx employee can bump me out at any time. What is the truth regarding jumpseat priority?
Q: Finally, what is everyone's opinion on using the FedEx jumpseat compared to the scheduled airlines? Is UPS any better or worse?
Thank you for any info.

Sorry about your bad experience with the Jumpseat Reservation folks. Sometimes they treat us like that also.
Maybe these links will help?

Most of the people that work there are very nice and helpful. If you can't find the answers to your questions, I suggest you call again and hopefully you will talk to someone else.
On the other hand, about six months ago I walked up to the counter to check in. The lady at the desk completely ignored me, not even a hello. She kept working on her computer, and was carrying on a conversation with someone at another desk. Yes, she saw me, and ignored me for about five minutes, every now and then turning her back to me. Finally I said, "Could I check in please, I'm really starving."
At that time, she just let me have it, screeching about how she was so busy, and how I just needed to think about the person on the other side of the counter. It was weird, that high pitched head bobbing side to side thing (I don't know how people can do that with their neck). I was pretty flabbergasted, and I kept agreeing, "Yes, you need to think about the other person," hoping she would listen to her own words. I am very friendly and non-confrontational, and this woman was seriously crazy. All I could think was that either she thought I said something I didn't, or there was something very wrong with her.
Then I remembered, oh yeah, I'm in Memphis. Sometimes we get treated this way. But not usually at work.

For sure. People don't treat others like that in my town. No turning their back on you when you come up to a fast food counter, having a loud, obnoxious conversation with their co-workers. They actually pay attention and treat you with dignity, no matter what you're wearing or how you look. I found in Memphis, if I wasn't dressed very nicely, the clerks could go through the entire transaction without a single word. Not hello, could you sign here, have a nice day. Not one word. I finally started complimenting them on the ability not to say a single word, leaving them confused. I don't know if they ever get that it wasn't actually a compliment!

New survey shows Memphis as the 4th MOST DANGEROUS city in the US. Now I remember why I commute!*?

I think you guys are being a little harsh about Memphis. It's not hard to get personal attention there. You just have to get out of the AOC. And a friendly smile and polite yessir/nosir is usually all it takes to keep from getting shot while the locals outside the gate relieve you of your wallet, cellphone, watch and car keys.

The resources you were directed to are helpful, but I notice they don't answer most of your questions.
The 24 hour limit for booking applies to each individual leg. If it were me, I would call 24 hours ahead of the first leg and reserve, then call back 24 hours ahead of the next leg. If for some reason you were not able to book the next leg, you could use that call to cancel the first leg you had already booked.
Different variations of the MD-11 have different numbers of seats. Many have 2 in the back, some have 4, a few have 6, the crew rest airplanes have none. Most have 3 in the front, some have 2. With tail number swaps very common, it would be almost impossible to say exactly how many seats will be on the airplane. The best thing to do is talk with the people in Jumpseat Admin -- their booking rules are fairly generic, but they know exactly which equipment is scheduled on the flight.
Same for the other airplanes.
Priority. Once you're booked on the jumpseat, you're pretty safe. I can't walk up and bump you off because it's My Company. In fact, it would almost have to be an Emergency, either personal or Company, to result in your being bumped. That's a plus, because if you're bumped, you can't easily walk down to the next gate to look for a different ride. I've heard many people say that makes using the FedEx jumpseat better than a passenger airline's jumpseat.
I hope you don't let your bad experience on the phone scare you away. We are happy to offer the jumpseat any time you can make it work for you -- look forward to seeing you soon.
