FedEx Interview/New Hire Class
#71
4100 isn't a pie in the sky number. If you wipe out the SO position of the 727, then cancel a couple of Asia flights (remember Int'l jets are manned at 10-11 crews per plane) you can see a contraction is not unlikely. Add 50% or more of the lines being bought up and the math makes sense. You can increase BLGs 8-12 hours without them being higher than I've seen here in the past, so there is some elasticity in the system.
But its not gloom and doom for hiring. There are retirements every month. Some pilots medical out, or worse. As 2016 approaches, if anyone out there seems more "pro business" than the current administration, we may see some rebounding. I don't think FedEx wants to gut the crew force and miss the next rally in business. But I also don't think they feel the need to add to their payrolls at the moment.
FedEx is a great place to work. But United and US Air are hiring, and Delta will be soon. Pay is going up there. There may be faster advancement at those companies than if you are stuck behind the 95-96 hires and us postal wave guys. I'd apply here and network like crazy, but I would not hesitate to apply other places as well. I know a few FedEx poolies over the years that were glad they had other options.

I'm sitting on an Amtrak train on my way to a relative's wedding in Vermont. Quite frankly ... it's clean, on time, no airport TSA hassles, has wifi and cell phone service, the cafe car has overpriced food.
It's not bad at all, business class looks quite nice (I'm in Coach).
Seems like it would be a great way to ship freight at an affordable price

Having been a client of Albie's, I can whole heartedly say he has nothing but the best intentions for aspiring pilots out there. His advice is nothing more than unadulterated truth for the uninitiated, looking out for their best interest.
