It's the end.

My point is we all have to accept a mandatory regulated age in a seniority based system.

Anything less is disingenuous

Let's all plan accordingly and go out with a big smile!

A'o Aloha,

I feel sorry for all the guys who spend all their time on the APF condemning those senior to them for not retiring .....my wife said you can quote her on that......

Senior at FedEx offers a lifestyle that's significantly different from what junior guys get. The job becomes sort of a pleasure, especially if you have the ability to pick your trips, your vacation, your training dates, etc, etc. It's hard to compare the flying that the senior guys do to the flying that junior guys usually do. Day flights with one short leg in each direction vs. 4 legs in the middle of the night. Of course, many senior guys do the long haul, but again, it's what they want to do, as opposed to what they have to do, and it really does make all the difference.

I hope your plans work out and that you'll be able to pull the ripcord at your earliest convenience. Failing that, you seem to be on the right track to be the master of your own destiny. Good job (so far.)
JJ---nice write up. If I'm 62, at FDX working a trip a month....sure why not hang in there?? Motivation to me to get my butt moving is 1) land at domicile at 10pm, 60 year old RJ Capt is just getting there to sleep in a recliner for his 4:45am show. <----I will quit before I am this guy. 2) I want to be in a position, like many people where I have no debt going into retirement and I don't NEED to work (as you said). If I enjoy my job, I'd gladly keep doing it. When it's time to hang it up, I want to be in a position to do so on my own terms.

Believe it or not, at the regional level...at my company....they are trying to convince us that we are too expensive ~$80,000/yr CA and $45,000 yr SR FO. Sad thing is, I am sure they will succeed in getting concessions out of us. Our total compensation is great (401k match, health, etc.) however at the end of the year our W2=mediocre.

Side track---on apc there is an article about the $2,000,000 question (leaving a regional for a major/legacy).... Good write up. If I were to be lucky enough to score a seat at FDX, I would no doubt have an excellent career. Not to mention be set up very nicely for retirement (financially). At 65 I want to enjoy my wrinkly old ass wife, watch my son develop into his own, and enjoy time with grand kids if that happens. All while playing golf, enjoying life, etc.

The other thing is, like it or not, RJ or B777...this job is hard on your body. Very demanding. Very stressful. Not to mention sleep cycles. It's not bad at my age, but I started today at 4:40am. Done at 1600. Then a long overnight, 1420 show tomorrow and fly until 1am. I simply can't fathom doing that at 65!!!! I did have a FDX guy in my jumpseat a few weeks ago. He does day flying IAD-MEM. USPS stuff. If I had his gig, I'd work until I was put into a nursing home. At FDX you have it better than 80% of the guys in this industry. Hands down, consider yourself lucky.

Best of luck to everyone, to each their own.

While in principle, I agree with your, and your wife's sentiment, at least these can guys say they're stuck on a layover while hanging out on APF. What does it say about the retired guys that still hang out and post here. Shouldn't they be hanging out at RAPF, or would that be IRAPF?

Personally I think what it says about retired guys "hanging out" here is that they are interested in the well-being of their old company and fellow crew dogs. As well, just because some of us post from time to time, doesn't mean we actually "hang out" here. I stop by once or twice a day to: check on the condition of this group; monitor the happenings within the industry; laugh at all the UPS guys slamming their beloved Brown; and to keep my better half off the computer so that she doesn't buy another 10 cases of toothbrushes, etc.

Kind of like Alma Mater members keeping track of the school they were only at for four years, 30-40 years ago. I get that.
