Bottom line -
Does a dispatcher want me standing over their shoulder at their desk for the duration of their workday? A bit distracting and uncomfortable? You bet.
Does a mechanic want me following him around and standing over his workbench and watching him do his paperwork, etc for the duration of his workday? A bit distracting and uncomfortable? You bet.
Does an executive want me to sit on the couch in his office for the duration of his workday? A bit distracting and uncomfortable? You bet.
We extend OUR JS to fellow crew members as a courtesy. I'll bet the folks in the above examples don't mind when fellow dispatchers, mechanics, or office geeks enter their workspace. IT'S DIFFERENT!!
Why does anyone think this is ok? It would not be tolerated by any other work group. IT IS A DISTRACTION, PURE AND SIMPLE!!!

Well, I hate to run counter to all the kindness this thread has produced, but I'll take a dispatcher on my jumpseat anytime. I figure the more he/she learns about what I do and what I need from my dispatcher, the easier it will be for him to give me the help I need. I don't care if he's going to see Aunt Suzi or not, I WANT him on the jumpseat, not snoozing in the back. I want him to be part of the equation.
We often bit@h about the lack of help we get from our dispatchers. Put 'em in the cockpit and let them see what we see. Might work out for all of us. Just my opinion tho.

The letter I have found from SVP of TechOps lists; Regulatory, Security, Flight, and Finance departments involved in the company decision to allow FAA certificate holders to jumpseat, domestic personal travel, with PIC approval.
I know how some of you feel but will share the PM I got from one of your coworkers:
[deleted PM]
That being said: I have no idea why anyone would attempt to jumpseat for personal travel, knowing the possibility of being rejected by a PIC.
It will be interesting how this plays out. I sure wouldn't want to be a PIC that loses my job for violating company policy and has to battle in court over FAR interpretation.

I'm impressed that the Finance Department signed off on the jumpseat policy -- we know how important their opinion is.
If I didn't know better, I might take "Glen the mechanic" for a company shill planted on APC to stir up trouble. Oh, wait, I don't know any better. You joined APC 9 days ago, shortly after the discussion on this thread began developing. Since joining, you've posted in this thread and one other, and you weren't very complimentary towards pilots in the other, either:
Just irkes me that some think a pilot's certificate automatically gives superhuman ability.
On the flip side, experience does count for something. I do have a much better sense of distance/thickness measurements with my eyes than most. It could be partly some natural instinct, but probably has to do with work experience.
... well, I can't think of a good use for that, and I don't want to suggest that you do something that's physically impossible, so I'll just leave you to find something productive to do with your thickness guage.
So, you've had your fun. Now you can show your cubicle buddies what you've done, and then go find someplace else to stir up trouble. It was fun.
