Hell, the last landing would have been an excellent time to use the Pneumatic brake

Yep, they physically go to 40, but most operators chose to limit their crews to 30 and recommended against 40 if they didn't put the blocker in there. It only dropped approach speed by 4kts or something and made roundout/flare tricky, more detriment than benefit. I was just wondering if these contractors train for and use the setting if it's available. I'd guess most likely no, but I was curious. I flew the sim a bunch and was told not to use 40.

1. No anti-skid
2. No differential brakes
3. If someone has their feet on the brakes out of habit or (on a 4000 foot runway) panic, the shuttle valve hangs up and no brakes.

Overall, though, it's hard to think of another airliner that could do so many things, and so well.

The best thing about 40 flaps was it dropped the nose in low viz. Watch out in a cross, you could round off the edges. Way to much history. If you want to see the wing disassemble every 15 min.Museum Of Science And Industry-Chicago....

727
Just dug out my 727 flight manual.
With the exception of the few PSA 200's,
that we ran on the shuttle, all of our 170+ 727's
had the 40flaps setting available.
My first trip as a new F/O was through STT
with the old 4000+ft. runway, forty flaps was
normal procedure. We trained for the procedure
and except for certain airports where forty flaps
were required, it was always at the Captain's option
for thirty or forty flaps.

Flap 25 degree take offs ,mercifully we never had to test the theory of its performance after caging one, clean up began at 400 feet in that configuration anyway, but boy o boy, that would have been a busy , adrenaline spiked evolution.
