And by the way, speaking of KMDW, ever heard of Southwest Airlines Flight 1248?, and that was with a jet with a much improved braking system.
Really? Well with +5000 hours as a B727 CA, most at MDW, stopping a 727 is not a big deal. All around the best built Boeing ever.

Stopping a FLUF however, is a challenge at MDW and as for WN 1248, yea, I was there that night waiting to depart and then went to my crash pad 2 blocks from the end of 31C.

It's been a long time since I was on the 727 but if I remember correctly, the -200 had a max of 30 degrees of flaps for landing while the -100 had 40 degrees. I'm going to say Flaps 30 is the answer. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

Delta's 727-200s had the 40 flap setting, but we rarely used it. There was no need. Some carriers did install a metal plate on the flap quadrant to block settings over 30 degrees.

Hah! 727's land just fine, braking is awesome even on a packed snow runway - at least when it's light loaded. Landed them plenty of times in blizzards at BTV, MHT, PWM, etc and then turned off early. Piece of cake in the old gal. Take off? Now that's a different story.

The flaps 40 block was part of one of the many versions of Stage III noise (I know, oxymoron) compliance. It was just a lever lock mechanical plate. Remove it and 40 flaps were available.

exactly, in Vegas at during high summer we would use 12k of 14k available on 25R for takeoff, i wouldn't breath till we were through 10000 feet and accelerating,i felt like shouting fore crossing that golf course near the end of the runway.

Thank you, Tom. I think ours must have been plated, because the more I think about it, I never did a flaps 40 landing in a -200. It may have been removed for this flight. I remember the throttles were "offset" to one side as there was no fourth engine.
