UPS is a stayed and conservative company. They make money doing what they do now. There's no need or drive to create a new market or innovate into something new until there's a proven demand and substantial profit margin.
FDX, though not as much as the past I think, is an innovator. "They" are not satisfied sitting on their laurels and keeping the status quo. Fred created an industry, and that spirit is still there. Take a few chances and it will pay off in the future, though maybe not immediately.
To me, it's a difference of drive... Fred wants to see his "baby" grow and succeed because he is personally invested in the growth and creation beyond monetary rewards. The other guys, well.. they got hired there because of a resume and are not personally invested in time and sweat. It's a paycheck.
As far as employee treatment... one pays more because they have to... or no one would put up with it.
again, my opinions... I could be wrong.

Roger that, received guys. Again, as an outsider, I think the tools/assets/people are in-place, talented and trained. The brand itself, its up there with CocaCola and Xerox. Everyone knows the brown truck is UPS. etc
I think UPS has a great place in the market. FedEx, is admittedly the next-day brand, but some of us need Shamu shipped or documents but not the next day, maybe two days. Etc.
maybe things will come around. Take care

I'm pretty sure Shamu would be DOA if these clowns tried to offer that service. Best guess is the postal contract goes the way of DHL & TNT. They will be parking airplanes not buying them. Welcome to bean counter management. Won't surprise me a bit to see another furlough.
As far as UPS growing the business. The numbers don't lie:
1-27-2008 Numbers
Total on list: 2954
1322 Captains total
1431 F/Os total
201 FEs total
12-2-2012 Numbers
Total on list: 2579
1179 Captains total
1400 F/Os total
0 F/E total
Summary
-375 total on seniority list
-143 Captain seats
-31 F/O seats
-201 F/E seats
48 or so still on the street.
