Flying with non ALPA members
#17
I have occasionally had the opportunity to discuss (politely, of course) union politics with NON-MEMBERS. Inevitably, the conversation get to the point where they say, "It's not about the money."
My reply is always the same. Prove to me it's not about the money. Prove it to me by making a tax deductible donation for the equivalent amount of money to a charity of your choice and submit the receipt to the union in protest.
So far ... no takers. I guess that says it all.

They don't have to join. They can just pay their share through the maintenance fee. In fact, I'm fine with them not joining and gaining the right to vote. Their's would just dilute the votes of the 15-20% that make the effort to participate in our elections.

Many years ago I was a charter member of ALPA 1, at FDX.....it was decertified and those folks ran the independent union until it ws obvious that it wouldn't work, and ALPA 2 came out of the ashes with many of the independent folks now in charge..(cliff notes )
I was pouting, and refused to rejoin ALPA 2 ....Late one night, a great f/o named M...K...y approached me about joining. He simply said the union needed me, and we needed to show solidarity to the company.
He shamed and embarassed me for my selfish view, but he did it in a kind and professional way.....I rejoined, paid my back dues, and will get my 2nd retirement plaque from ALPA in 7 days......Our union has its warts, and its never perfect, but so much better than the alternative......try the carrot instead of the stick with some of these guys.....it worked for me, and it just might work for some others.
Flame away, nomex in place
