Default FedEx Acquires Two More MD-11Fs

From Aviation Week:

FedEx Acquires Two More MD-11Fs
Posted by BRIAN BOSTICK 7:24 AM on Oct 29, 2012

FedEx purchased two MD-11Fs from ILFC in October, both of which recently came off lease from World Airways. Both aircraft have been owned by ILFC and operated by World Airways since delivery in 1994 (N274WA) and 1995 (N276WA).

FedEx last purchased MD-11Fs in early 2011 when it purchased four from Malaysian cargo carrier Transmile.

FedEx now has a fleet of 66 MD-11Fs.

Good rumor, I'll help spread this one ... but,

I believe that Aviation Week said we were getting rid of the 727's starting back in 1987!*?

The last time I was at BWI (3-4 months ago?) there were approximately 6, seemingly abandoned, MD-11's parked close to the FDX ramp. I wonder if we'll get all of them?

A few Fridays ago there were two, one pax and one cargo. The next weekend the pax one was at a gate on the courtyard by terminal E (Int'l). A week later, only the pax bird was parked on the air cargo ramp.

So we're essentially buying the ones that we typically lease during peak anyway? Should make for some good replacements.

That would be weird, considering we took delivery of the last 727 built in 1984, and UAL didn't even retire the first 727 ever built until 1991.

Did they have World paint jobs?
They did R&R flights out of there and stashed some cargo birds there too.

Not sure what's going on these days. Things are grim over there.

I flew both tail numbers at World. N274 is a pure freighter and N276 was a passenger/freighter (World would convert it back and forth depending on the contracts).

For what it's worth, I was told last night that we bought these two aircraft for parts.

Neither were on the cargo ramp at BWI today.

Checking 274WA and 276WA on FlightAware shows they flew to VCV on 5 and 9 Oct respectively, so I do not think they were the aircraft seen at BWI.

A little more homework showed the tails I saw were 271WA and 272WA.

N276WA was converted to a pure freighter years ago.
