Don't get me wrong...I like flying it, however its not just like any other airplane--statistics don't lie. The Mad Dog has been on it's back too many times--with too many carriers. Again--it has stigma. The center main has failed too many times. It is not the best design. Neither was the Edsel.

Center gear failure is not unknown in the MD-11 (and DC-10-30/40 also). It has generally been traced back to the center gear "chattering" due to low strut pressure or brake issues. Some operators have disabled the center gear brakes until near maximum brake pressure is demanded by either the pilots or the autobrake system.
