Center gear failure is not unknown in the MD-11 (and DC-10-30/40 also). It has generally been traced back to the center gear "chattering" due to low strut pressure or brake issues. Some operators have disabled the center gear brakes until near maximum brake pressure is demanded by either the pilots or the autobrake system.
