Is it safe to say that being an internal employee is an easy way to put yourself at the front of an 11,000 person waiting list?

As an internal the interview is the same except you have a personnel rep attend your Managment interview. Yes, it puts you in front of all external people applying, and the time in job requirement can vary from 12 -24 mths before applying. I was an internal and built my time while working for the company. It took longer but I had a job in Flight Ops I did not want to leave as I was married. If you can I would leave under good terms fly my A@@ off and then come back, senority is everything. Just my 2 cents.
Good Luck

What is required to use someone as a recommendation, do you have to fly with them?

I worked on the ramp at RIC for 18 months (hired Aug 94 as a "casual" employee, "permanent" status attained Nov 94, eligible for interview on 20Nov95, next job posting was 1Dec95, interviewed late Jan96, hied to the line 21Feb96. I had NO FedEx pilot recommendations. You need 1 year continous (or longer in some cases, ie. professional flight instructors) employment as a "permanent" employee (PT or FT) and still an employee to gain an interview as an internal employee. I continued to fly with my reserve unit. There was a guy on my ramp that flew the F-27 to/from EWR each night and then parked his plane and worked our ramp. Many ways to skin the cat! Search this forum, its been discussed many times!

I'd think the easiest way would be to fly during the day.
