I'll use a simple example. RSA balance is 66 hours so you pick-up a 6 hour MUS trip to bring your balance back up to 72 hours. It just so happens that the 6 hour MUS trip is a hard time trip. On the way home you have to circumnavigate some weather and the trip ends up blocking/paying 7 hours (it was really nasty weather). Your RSA balance would then be 73 hours with a MUS bank balance of -1 hour. Lots of other scenarios possible - block over 10, delays, trip revisions, etc.

In the interest of fair and accurate reporting and to protect the folks that only get their contract information from this site, I still think you can only get your RSA to 72 hours. Section 4.BB.1.e. states that "Overage CH accrued during a make-up sick trip shall be applied towards a pilot's disability sick account." So, yes, you do get the hours, but they go in to your DSA not your RSA. You still have the sick hours available, just some different hoops to go through to get at them.
So, what happens if you already have 686 hrs in your DSA?
Just kidding...

I guess there are two ways to look at this. My thought process was that if I was laying in an ICU somewhere I didn't want my wife to have to go through the hassle and worry of trying to keep the paychecks coming with LTD and everything that entails. My default bid is (was) highest paying line with carryover; so I would get a bid award every month for at least 8 or 9 months with an automatic paycheck until the DSA was drawn down. It could be even longer with RSA and vacation. That gave me great peace of mind and was one less thing to worry about.
Also, it might just be me, but I have a problem with calling in sick when I am not. Everyone deals with this in their own way and I don't intend to judge. I just know what worked for me.

By the way, I planned very poorly and left the Company with 600 hours in my DSA. POOF!!! GONE!!!
This is why MUS is crazy!

In my opinion, retiring with unused sick leave is not some kind of failure that resulted in free work. I see sick leave as a safety net I need every now and then or may seriously need if something big happens. I don't see it as money I am owed if I stay healthy. That's just me.

It is not the ethics of using or abusing your sick bank, it is the logic of working and banking hours you may or may not get paid for. JMHO.

So, are you saying that you can't think of a scenario where flying a MUS trip is a good option?
I'm truly asking for my own education.
What if you sick out of a single departure month of flying in January and end up well after a couple of days? Are you going to take the month off and just be "in the red" as far as sick leave goes for the rest of the year?
