1. Is there ANYTHING, TonyC, that you are not an expert on? why are you just a line pilot & not CEO or CFO or leading our union?
2. TonyC, you contradict yourself by saying "some people don't want to be bumped" & "it's a good deal to be bumped" - I guess "good deal" or not is, as always, in the eyes of the beholder
3. DLax85 - I'm just a line pilot & do not (hardly ever) PDO bump anyone - I was just curious about av8rmike's "process" because as he described his process it came across to me as "with great power comes great responsibility" and/or slightly judgemental to have to check a pilot's calendar before "bestowing" the gift of a PDO bump (see point 2 as to whether it's a gift worth receiving or not). Perhaps that's not how he (or TonyC) view the PDO bump process - but that's just how it came across - so I was curious.
P.S. the process that av8rmike replied with/described still does not REQUIRE looking at a calendar - that step is, evidently, a personal criteria by which he chooses to utilize as a criteria for PDO bump "worthiness"

And yes, I'm sure there are ways to get to the same point (phone number/email address) without doing it the way I do. As I indicated, it works for me and has the added benefit of highlighting calendar blockers. And yes again, I would not "bestow" (your phrase, not mine) a PDO on a calendar blocker. To reference Tony once more, secrecy and being in a Union are antithetical.

Nope, it's not a Peter-Parker-power, just a (hopefully) mutually beneficial arrangement. If you don't think being the recipient of a PDO is a good deal, well... I have had people not agree to be bumped due to the reasons Tony listed, but they have never failed to say "but feel free to call me and try again!", so empirically it's a good deal.

I always considered getting PDO bumped a "good deal" too &, like TonyC, would welcome a bump any time.
I'm probably biased in that thinking because I don't "hub turn" & so a PDO bump would never interrupt a nice/grueling hub-turn week for me.
I disagree, however, that blocking your calendar should automatically eliminate you from PDO bump consideration - I think that "policy" smacks a little of the attitude I previously described (power to "bestow" - my word) - but to each his own.

Every time I see someone that I don't personally know, that is not wearing an ALPA pin, lanyard or some other type of union membership identification...My first thought is, they're probably a non-member, a scab or both.
Every time I see people glad handing, talking, laughing, eating, etc. with a non-member or a scab ...My first thought is that they are imbeciles.
Every time I see a FDX guy wearing a pilot hat(other than on a picket line) or one of those sweaters with the shoulder boards...My first thought is, he's a dork.
Every time I run into a blocked calendar...my first thought is, that person is probably hiding behavior that they don't want their fellow pilots to see and/or they probably fit into one the above categories.
But, that's just the way I think. I can't help it. And I'll admit, I've been wrong quite a few times. At least on the hat and sweater guys.

This MSG is too short, blah, blah

I can see the sweater/hat/dork thing. But as for the other issues, well, I'd say it says more about you than those you observe.
As for the calendar blocking assumption I'm as guilty as you are in thinking something negative. I'll try and give the benefit of the doubt, though it does stick in my crawl a bit.
Lanyards/pins? Seems to me that more people wear personal lanyards, out of whatever motivation, than there are scabs/non-members so I tend not to think of them as scabs/non-members unless I know it to be so.
Once I know, there will be no talking and laughing however.

I like the sweater with the shoulder boards ... at least now I know I'm a dork ...
I agree with with your calendar blocker thought ...

What about an FO who wears a hat?
I was sittin' sideways on the -10 on the way to Campinas when the Captain asked the FO why he had a hat. The FO got a big grin on his face and asked, "Have you ever seen a Brazilian girl dancin' around your room wearin' nuthin' but your hat?"
