Always interesting when someone can read your mind and you learn all of your relations are problematic and filled with dissension. Had to laugh cuz my wife told me to just drop the trip (without pay) when I halved my concerns this weekend by speaking with her. Not too often that you get advice to drop 40 odd percent of your salary from your significant other.

Always nice to have a reminder of how truly blessed I am
May I suggest you don't drop the trip. Instead, I also recommend that you call or e-mail Pro-Standards (their phone numbers and e-mail addresses are on the ALPA website under Committees L-Z) ahead of time, give them a heads up about your previous experience, and the possibility that you may need to get them involved on the upcoming trip. Let them intervene if necessary.

If the captain's behavior doesn't improve after you've involved pro-stan, then call the duty officer and get him involved as a last resort. You should not take a pay cut because of this knucklehead.

Late to the game on this thread but as a new MD Capt and long time FO I agree with all the posts suggesting getting Prostans involved. Why do you think they exist? I also agree with the suggestion to pull the CVR CB to preserve the conversation. There is no place in the cockpit for this type of behavior and we are not doing anyone any favor by not dealing with it.

Those that posted that the NTSB would key on this behavior if it happened during a mishap are correct. So, Why not deal with the problem before it becomes a true safety issue.

You would hope that getting Prostans involved would rectify the situation and prevent some FNG on probation from having to deal with one of these clowns. If the person does not get the clue at least you have started the process.

One last thing, I wasn't surprised by JJs comments as he was one of those Capt's before he went out on his disability scam. The FOs keep book on these guys and JJ was a point of conversation on more than one occasion. Others were DD and DR from the LA domicile.

Already covered ... bad idea. Maybe you missed these:

Really? That's what you call a heart attack? A disability scam?

Sorry to carry this on any longer, but I can not wrap my head around the responses suggesting that an FO should put up with a captain who has set a precedent that CRM will be NIL.

Isn't there professional responsibility on the FO's behalf that would require him to not fly with a captain that will result in this sort of flight deck?

Sorry to jump in on a FedEx thread but I can't resist. I have been a Captain a long time here, 22 years, but there is no way I would ever treat an F/O like that and not expect to get a ton of heat from management for acting that way. In addition, there is no way 90 % of our F/Os would put up with behavior like that. After the first rant a hearty "F--- Off" would be proffered and a phone call made if an apology was not forthcoming.

You guys are professionals and deserve to be treated that way. This guy is obviously not. Most bullies act that way because they have gotten away with it for so long. Stop feeding his ego. Stop letting him intimidate you. Let him know in no uncertain terms that he has stepped over the line and you are not going to put up with his bullshirt. You don't owe the guy one ounce of respect if he is not going to give you any. This stuff died out when the last of the dinosaurs went extinct.

Of course, you could always pull a John Wayne. See the "High and the Mighty."

I noticed it was said he went all red faced and looked like a heart attack waiting to happen.....you could always look at this as an opportunity to help cull the herd just a little bit. Be respectful and polite, just do the stuff that will make his blood pressure go through the roof. Maybe just maybe you get to move up a number!

Okay before someone goes high order on me.....It was a joke!

I know this was posted as a joke, but it got me to thinking about an actual accident that stemmed from this sort of behavior:

British European Airways Flight 548 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

(Don't give me guff about the wiki citation - there are enough others that provide essentially the same view, and wiki is easy to get to).
