Seems like there should be a way to save LTD for legitimate reasons and make it more difficult to readily abuse - anyone going out on LTD a year before they are due to retire, whatever the age is, has a high chance of cheating the system. There's a reason why so many public safety officers (police, fire, etc) go on LTD in California just before retirement yet they don't seem to have that abusive problem in most other states - because the rules as written allow them to and it cost a TON of money.

I believe that one must use up all his accrued sick time before one is able to go out on LTD. As well, with the aforementioned restrictions, LTD is really a hassle and although I'm sure we've got a few who have felt the need to press-to-test, most guys (in my opinion) use LTD for what it was meant.
Of the 290,000 (approx) employees, company wide, only about 4500 of them (the pilot group) have the ability to use long term disability. Of those 4500, I wonder how many, at any given time are actually using their LTD? I'd bet it's a very, very small percentage. We as a pilot group make up about 0.015% of the total employee group, so my guess is that although in might appear to be a very expensive perk, in reality it's not so much. As well, I don't imagine that most guys who use LTD do so in their final year of employment, but rather use their normal sick bank, which pays at normal pay rates, unlike LTD which pays at 60% for 2 years, then 50% (of the average of the highest 12 months in the previous 36 months.) Of course I could be wrong about what other guys do, but I don't think so.

Busboy,
Thanks for pointing out my math mistake. I knew that there was a reason not to do public math in public. It stinks to be wrong. Why I remember there was a time back in '82 when I thought I was wrong. Turns out I was right, but that's another story. So to correct the math, our pilot group makes up about one and a half percent of the total employee group.
Anyway, to all, have a great 4th of July and be safe out there. The world is a dangerous place.
