Default NRT Hard Landing - now it's ANA

Please keep in cargo forum - due to the similarity (and differences) to FX 80:

Wow!

I thought the landing looked awkward, but no worse than an embarrassment to the PF. Those fuselage creases they show at the gate are a whole 'nother story.

Is this airframe done, or can they return it to service?

Touching down nose wheel first is more than just an embarrassment! Yikes!

Yikes is right!, in the home 'drome no less.

Reminds me of a "near mishap" in ANC years ago. The load planners put a pallet in the forward most position that they thought was weighed in pounds, but it turned out to be kilos. They crew had a hard time rotating on the departure out of LA and as the CG moved forward as they burned gas things didn't get any better. There was moderate icing in ANC and the crew added 20 knots to ref which probably saved them. Engineering later determined that on approach, the center of lift was almost 6 inched ahead of the leading edge. BTW, the crew never had any idea why the plan was out of CG, load planning never caught their mistake (an astute ramper in ANC caught it while doing the post flight pallet swap).

My point is, it's easy to look at this video and say pilot error, however, there may be a bit more going on than meets the eye.

Not this week! The Boeing AOG guys do amazing work, the only question is the cost benefit of sinking the repair cost into this airframe.

Holy crap. That... that is definitely not going to buff out. I can't imagine that airframe will ever take to the skies again.

Can you imagine the ride up front? At least two people probably need some pretty serious dental work, and their spines are now about as jacked up as that airframe.

From PPrune:

Wasn't as simple as that. Landed at NRT around the same time. Probably just before the aircraft concerned.
Winds observed at 1000 ft agl were 240/58-72 kts, dropping down to 230/48 kts steady at 500 ft. And then there was a +/- 15 kts WS reported. On my observation it was more like +/- 20 kts windshear!
And the turbulence was huge. Moderate to moderate/severe turbulence REPORTED by 4 airplane before me from 500 ft to touchdown. I observed Moderate/Severe all the way down from 500 ft to touchdown.
And BTW the winds reported on ground were 220 to 250 at 28 gusting 44 kts. That's a direct crosswind for the runway in use-16R.
And the winds were spot on!
Airport should have been temporarily closed.

Boeing Team could probably fix it, but looking at the skin creases theres going to be some bent frames and stringers in there. Financially viable repair depending on how many hours and cycles the airplane has accumulated i guess

20 knot windshear, severe turbulence, crosswinds up to 44 knots...how can you even attempt the approach? What kind of airplane has limits/equipment that would allow that to be carried through to a landing?

Thankfully, they were not in an MD-11.
