I have been on contract with Air Japan/ANA going on six years now, this company's culture is extremely conservative, they dispatch us with plenty of fuel and are always very conscious of turbulence reports, if at any point severe turbulence is reported, the decision wouldn't be for the crew to make, they would send you somewhere else, that nonsense of severe turbulence at 500 feet and the crew pressing on with the approach? guys listen, that is nonsense, an impossibility for one of these pilots to do something like that, it goes against everything that forms them as individuals and employees of this company, they can't do that anymore that sumo wrestlers can just carry on with the match without all the ceremonial tossing of the salt into the ring. I guarantee you it didn't happen.

I'm not saying the weather was CAVOK and beautiful, it was a challenging day as it does get in Narita from time to time, but outside of the earlier hours of the morning (up to 10 or 11 in the morning) where the gusts were at their peak, all airlines, not only ANA were operating their normal schedules.
Dominican I think most people will recognize that the guys in this jet did did not do anything they thought was unsafe. I believe the same can be said for the pilots of FedEx 80 at NRT. There are a lot of monday Morning quarterbacks around and the internet is a great place for fools and anonymous posting to web boards.

They just can't fly.
Is that what you're saying?
I'm baffled that you interpret that from what I said!!!! what I'm saying is that all companies, not only ANA operated their afternoon schedules in and out of Narita, by your logic this means that every pilot made the decision to come in, did it under unsafe conditions then? About they just can't fly comment, I would reconsider this stance, we are all subject to a mistake under our condition as human beings, the Fedex pilots were considered good pilots by all that knew them, AA accident in Cali, these were also good pilots, what I'm saying is that the picture that has been painted of them as unnecessary risk takers, mission driven at all cost, a company culture that punishes diversions, all this has been discussed in PPrune as contributing to their decision to continue with the approach and that simply is not the case.

Good post, Dominican. Having lived in Japan in a prior life (military) and having flown NRT etc... as a cargo hauler for 20+ years (UPS), I agree completely with you. Hard to stop the monday morning quarterbacking on forums, though. You are a voice of reason amid the noise.
