Did management do this to make their pilot group unhappy? Sometimes their actions just baffle me... why sow dissent in your ranks. Unbelievable.

Just to play devils advocate for the new hires... If the choice was you're out of the pool or accept this class date... Tempting for them to accept the class date and hope that the furloughed guys will be able to win a grievance and get reinstated at proper seniority with pay backs. That new hire could have also been furloughed multiple times by UAL or some similar company in the last 10 years. I don't know... just trying to throw another argument up.

I know it would be 100x better if the company did the right thing... but even 1, 10, 20 new hires turning down a class date because it's the right thing to do will not stop the company from hiring fresh blood off the street.

Hiring straight into the left seat no less, even a few who were union members at the time.
This is comparing apples to oranges and doesn't reflect at all what ABX appears to be doing.
UPS has hired to replace management pilots who are not line pilots and are not union members. Our past history as a union allows UPS to do this. As much as we don't like it this is what has occurred since the beginning of the airline.
From the posts it appears that ABX is not recalling pilots for line flying positions and hiring off the street for the vacancies that should be filled by furloughed pilots. UPS is recalling, very slowly, and filling the line positions with pilots that have been recalled. Comparing the two does the furloughed ABX pilots a dis service .

Today is the 10th day that replacement workers are at ABX while furloughed pilots are still unemployed. The replacements have completed their forms for health insurance, life insurance and the 401K while the furloughed pilots struggle to provide insurance for their families and deplete ther retirements savings.

The replacements have filled out their direct deposits paperwork so their paychecks can go directly into their bank accounts while the furloughed pilots worry if there will be enough money in their accounts to pay the bills.

The replacement workers are probably sitting in class and daydreaming about what they'll do with the money when they go to 2nd year pay while the furloughed pilots worry if they will be able to keep their homes, feed their families and help their children.

The teamsters say the company has a pretty good excuse, it was a mistake. Somehow, the company accidentally interviewed them, conducted background checks, made offers of employment, fingerprinted them, took urine samples, scheduled class dates and printed ID cards. The IBT seems to be very excited that the company at least admitted they made a mistake. Now, the company told the IBT they will try to "fix" the problem. How would you respond to that offer?

Ok, so what does the contract actually say?

If it were me, I would file a Lawsuit for gross violation of Contract, if in fact Seniority is defined in the contract as was just stated above.

Having read this thread so far, I still don't get it. Is there something that explains this from the company's point of view?

The company wanted to hire replacement workers because they cost less. The company explained their actions by saying it was a mishap. They obviously believe they can get away with that tactic.

Today is the 10th day that replacement workers are enjoying work at ABX while 2 dozen pilots remain furloughed and ready to return. Recently, the replacement workers were given a big stacks of books needed to get them through initial training. Some of the furloughed pilots probably have children in college. Spring Term will start soon if it hasn't already. College students need a big pile of books too, but text books are not free.
