121.547 defines who can sit in the cockpit. 121.583 is written to address people sitting aft of the cockpit in a cargo only airplane. But both regs have slop that allow anyone to sit in either location with the one-time approval of the FAA, the company, and the captain. It's do-able but most management types don't want to bother getting approval. This is a sore subject in that I think it appropriate to have one's family onboard for one of their last flights before retirement. To take it further and have the opportunity to take family on any trip is certainly do-able but with the carriage of hazardous materials and such it would be more involved than most would entertain. A one-time special event wouldn't be so involved if only management would give it consideration.
