FDX defers 11 Boeing 777F, orders 767

I'm certainly no 757/767 expert, but I "thought" that the FedEx 757 glass cockpits were a unique configuration and that it was unlikely that Boeing would deliver our shiney new 767's with said glass cockpit?
Wouldn't that hinder a common type rating?

I'm not sure if you are aware that Fedex's 757 don't have the same cockpit as all other 757's. Fedex put in an all glass cockpit, so the 767's we buy are going to have to somewhat match our 757 cockpit. At least I think they will have to to get a common type. You never know.

It won't matter. The 767-300 and the 767-400 are the same type rating and they're different cockpits. The 300 is a combo of glass and round dials and the 400 is all glass. The same goes for the older and newer 737's and 747's.

GLASS
PART-GLASS
Not to mention, my B757: B767 type, earned in a sim with the Fedex ISS glass displays, allows me to operate older B757s with conventional displays.

Month old info, but . . .
Cockpit configs purportedly discussed with Boeing included 787-ish (from KC-46), 777, couple variations of production 767. The ISS from our 757 was a non-starter (Boeing does not want to be the OEM of that system).
Inclusion of one of the 767 configs would mean a stop work on the current 757 ISS installs, to coincide around 767 delivery, mod of further 757 to that config, and retrofit of ISS aircraft.
All of this has probably changed as the initial buy from these discussions was 45 aircraft.
Therefore we will probably get a turn-and-slip with a yaw string on the windscreen.

Furthermore, American Airlines also has the Innovative Solution and Support (IS&S) Cockpit in their 757/767 fleet. They aren't totally converted, so they are flying a mix of the 'classic' and IS&S cockpits. I think they call it the "Maui Conversion". Not sure of the story on that one. I am not sure how many are converted and what the status is of this program considering their Chapter 11 Status.
FWIW, we aren't the only operators of the IS&S cockpit. Airborne Express, CargoJet and ATI all have the conversion.
Regardless, I am looking forward to flying the 767s with whatever cockpit it has.

Next time you are in the Gucci Bldg look at the ISS 757 cockpit pictures on the classroom wall and then go look at the boeing standard 777 classroom wall pictures. I'll bet you see a lot more similarities then differences. I will also bet the new 767 cockit cant be all that different.
