Bidding 101
Hey guys,
Need a little help here. I am on IOE right now and am having some difficulty with how to bid for November. My validation ride is the day before the view add window closes. My question is, do I bid a secondary and just deal with that when it comes out and bid normally for an awarded secondary line or do I bid highest paying line and deal with the custom process after my validation is over during the view add window since I will have 24 hours before it closes? Or does it not matter as I am pay only until complete and that is what I will get . Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Since you will not finish before the bid closes you will be pay only. Whatever you are awarded will be linked to the days off of the awarded line from your previous acft. You will have a line built for the remainder of oct based on your awarded line in oct, minus the work days accomplished during training. Nov will be built prior to vtos and you should be able to give some input.

You must be active in your new seat by the close of the bid to be able to bid in new seat. If you are a new hire then I am not sure any of it matters. If you are upgrading or transitioning then you will still be bidding in your old seat in pay only status. In which case, you will get a custom line that has the same number of days off as the line you bid in old seat and BLG of bid award. Since you will be activated before the bid month starts I don't see any advantages to bidding max days off other that the days off. Maybe someone else can enlighten us.

Thanks guys, year 10 FO. So, will I be awarded a line during the view add window or during the secondary line build window? I guess max BLG and protect min days off is the best option and see what happens, or not, maybe max days off is the way to go, not worried about the hours, want the time off for family. Thanks for the input, it has helped.

How I gamed my custom line.

What will happen depends on when the Line Check guy verifies it, how fast you put in your custom line preferences and how fast scheduling decides to move.
Here is what I would do in your shoes:
Bid lines that have the max days off.
If you can beat your scheduler pick up some open time trips throughout the month. This will prevent scheduling from giving you big long blocks of R days. The trips you fly will also give you leveling for when you do have to fly off reserve. You also have the option of trying to drop some your trips after you get your schedule because your BLG will be plussed up by the open time trips ypou added.

If you can hold a high paying line with max days off, that would be best. For instance, on the 11, a vcp line with 9 work days that is paid based on block time would give you a decent pay only check, but would only work 9 days in the month.

If you are going to activate after the bid closes you will be awarded a pay only line for Nov. After you activate it will become a custom line. The custom line will be built after the secondary lines are built. You will most likely get all R days You will also get a custom line for the rest of Oct.
If open time is limited in your seat and you feel that your custom line will be all R days then bid highest paying line and you get paid more for sitting reserve. They can only put 15 R days on your calendar. (if your "highest paying line" only had you working 12 days - even better - they can only assign 12 R days).
If lot of open time trips may be left over after all secondaries are built or you just want to guarantee the most time off then bid for max days off.

How I gamed my custom line after I got 12 days off during IOE, assuring my activation date coincided with opening of open time.

Hey LAG
What about this:
25.I.4.c. A pilot eligible for custom line assignment shall not submit for any bid line adjustments (Section 25.L.), volunteer or draft trips for the period covered by his custom line until after he receives such line.
