B747-8 certified - El Ocho esta listo
#21
That said, BAWC/GSS don't want the first several planes because they are coming in heavier than expected (payload, range, etc issues). My source says the first several may end up with the Qantas, and therefore flown by Atlas crews.
And remember, this is all speculation and rumor...don't believe anything anyone says, including my rant here.

Baron,
You are correct sir, but I see what prompted your statement. I started a thread called El Ocho Esta Listo. Someone else started a thread called b747-800 certified. When the Mods merged the two threads it made it look as if I called it the -800 since they made me the OP but lifted someone else's title. I've been accused of worse though.
That aside, I seem to recall an internal note going around saying that the number 8 was chosen because it is representative of good luck - in some cultures at least.
Note that the Boeing Company colors changed as well, following the same (good luck) logic.

The same logic was applied on the 7E7 which became the 787, even though 8 was next after the 777.
Just to be clear...it's a -8, not a -800.

Or...directly from the Boeing site:
"By working together with customers and applying the innovative new technologies of the 787 Dreamliner, Boeing created the 747-8 family. In fact, the designation 747-8 was chosen to show the technology connection between the 787 and the new 747."

However, the change in color scheme you refer to is for the 747-8I (Intercontinental) not the one that got its type certificate a few days ago...the B747-8F, the freighter.

Baron,
Again, correct sir. I obviously mixed up the 8 stories. The "luck" and "8" went with the 787. The reference you cited is solid.
744Driver,
Correct as well. I was rambling on about the luck references. Something I seem to be lacking in recent posts.
