New guy on the MD 11 needs help!!
Hi everybody,
I have just finished simulator training and am about to begin my IOE on the MD 11. Having previously flown the B767/757 before Iīve heard all those terror stories about the Douglas ( Boeing??!!) but didnīt gave it much tought until my first day in MD 11 school. The manuals and CBT were confusing, the airplane seems to be anything but user friendly and to make things worse I had the simulator instructor from hell. Two weeks of trheats and punishment from 2100 to 0300 as a good torture simm session should be.
Man, how I miss my old 767, I can not express it in words.
So, I see that thereīs a lot of experienced MD drivers here and I think that some of the guys at UPS may have done the same transition from the 767/757 that Iīm doing right now. I would REALLY aprecciate any advice on how to make this move less painfull and specially if some of you know about any study guide or training material I could buy on the net. Thereīs a lot of it on Boeings and Buses but almost nothing on the MD, and I definetly refuse to call it a Boeing, definetly.
I donīt fly for an US carrier and thereīs no other MD operator around here.
Thanks a lot for any word of wisdon from anyone of you.

MD-11 Gouge www.md11.info
PS She is a good ship and you will like her. She performs well and has a lot of magic. It took me 6 months to get comfortable.

Never did a glass Boeing, came from a "classic" direct to the MD. The FMS is key, it can't be that much harder than the 767/757 , it is still Honeywell If you've made it to IOE, you must have survived the 2 eng out drills!! Go have fun, contrary to popular opinion, it's easy to land and can be landed smoothly.

I think you'll also find some useful tools on http://www.md-11.org/
If I'm not mistaken, it's put together by a guy from UPS, so there might be some Company-specific information there. But the vast majority is interesting and useful.
Truth in advertising: The gouge offered in the above post (www.md11.info) also contains Company-specific information (FedEx), but is also interesting and useful.
Given the number of MD-11 operators on this forum, there's a fair chance you could even have your questions answered here. Where did you do your training?

First of all, thanks s lot for your insights. I went to ground school at Varig Airlines in Rio, Brazil and the simm was held at CAE South America at Sao Paulo. Some senior guys here also told me that once flying the line I will begin to enjoy it, hope so !! It is a very nice forum you guys have here, I always saw UPS and Fedex airplanes on VCP where I used to ly ERJīs some years ago and dreamed to fly heavy metal someday.
I will check on thes sites, thanks a lot again!!

FYI ... I went through MD-11 ground school at McDonnell-Douglas in Long Beach. They say the MD-11 FMS software is based on the A330/A340 software so you prior Airbus guys should have it easy.

From a FedEx instructor? I'm shocked to hear that! (sarcasm)

Don't worry about ever taking a sim ride there again, UPS just bought that sim in Sao Paulo.

Are you sure??!!! Really!!??? If so, I will not have to come back to "Alcatraz" for recurrency training. Instead, we will be sent for some other training center , maybe in the US or euorope. I hope my airline make a deal with Fedex or UPS. Unfortunatelly "the instructor from hell" works for my airline so we still have to live with "the beast". Donīt you guys at UPS want him along with the purchased sim???
