You're absolutely right, and so if someone who is planning on retiring soon, doesn't use those hours, they go bye-bye. I guess that means that some good old-fashioned planning is in order, to compensate for losing what could potentially be a very large paycheck ($168,515.) Mind you, I'm not advocating that someone lie, but it would seem to me that walking away from that kind of cash is just plain foolish. The problem is that unless the person is actually sick, there's really no honest way to get at those funds, unless of course that person manages to get him or herself sick, probably worrying about losing that money, and can get a doctors note. If that were the case, that individual wouldn't have to go to work for the better part of their last year. Stranger things have happened I suppose.

Reminds me of the story about the 30-year United Airlines widebody captain, who was about to retire. Seems the company had a small party for him, and lots of nice things were said about him, both by management as well as other line pilots. Anyway, when it was his turn to speak, he slowly got up and walked to the microphone, where the only thing he said was: "I've been here for over 30 years, and I can honestly say that the only thing that I regret is that (wait for it) ..... I'll be leaving 20 minutes of sick time in my sick bank." Now that's my hero.
