I knew I didn't have to explain 757 shrinkage as someone would for me.

There are 6 yr Capts at the bottom of the 72. Honest question, will they ever go to training or will the airplane be gone by then?

The new 6 yr capts on the 727 should be in training this time next year assuming upcoming new hires are trained directly into the widebodies, which would free up 727 training capacity. The current training ltr includes approx 25 non-flex capts, whose training could be completed by early 2012. Maybe a tad optimistic, but at least plausible, fuel prices, volumes and fleet plan not withstanding...

My bet is they will train/activate.....how long they stay in the seat is another question.

727 still planned to be on property until Aug 2015...but I think in 2013 it could start shrinking to the level that secondary vacancies will no longer be filled and excess bids could even start in some seats, if those at the top don't retire/bid out.

Default Unfilled F/O slots in Posting 11-02

MD-11 ANC - 37, but 8 new hires started 17 Jun, so 29
MD-11 MEM - 97
757 Europe - 14
757 MEM - 14
Bus MEM - 67

There's more in Bus HKG and the 727 (F/O & S/O) as well. That's over 221 vacancies BEFORE anybody else retires. I don't think the training department is going to be able to keep up. Did FedEx really need to stop the new hire classes until after the bid closed? I expect a lot of insufficient reserve messages.

They've got more sims now too.

.

They stopped hiring, company wide, in May as they approached the end of the fiscal year. Got to make those earnings estimates.
