FX: Phrases to know in CAN
We all know how important knowledge is in this job. You can never be too professional. So the other day, while standing around for 40 mins waiting for the crack CAN customs troops--all 5 of them--to handle the overload of clearing a single crew...we tired of whistling the 3 Stooges song, wiped the drool off our ties, and began to question of origins of some favorite American expressions:
Dog and pony show was a colloquial term used in the United States in the late-19th and early-20th centuries to refer to small traveling circuses that toured through small towns and rural areas. The term has come to mean an elaborately staged performance, presentation, or event designed to sway or convince people. It is often used in reference to a series of informational events put on by a company or group.
SNAFU is an acronym that stands for situation normal: all fouled up. It is sometimes bowdlerized to situation normal: all fouled up or similar.[1] In simple terms, it means that the normal situation is in a bad state, as it always is, therefore nothing unexpected. It's usually used in jest, or as a sign of frustration. The acronym is believed to have originated in the US Army during World War II.
fi·as·co
1. a complete and ignominious failure.
2. a round-bottomed glass for wine, especially Chianti, filled with a woven, protective raffia basket that also allows the bottle to stand upright.
three·-ring· circus (t̸hrē′riŋ′)
So there fellas--and you know who you are--now you know. The rest of you will have to come up with your own forms of entertainment next time you pass thru CAN. Good luck.

- a circus having three rings for simultaneous performances.
- any situation or event hilariously or confusingly packed with action.

I agree with FBH deffinitely forgot to add Chinese fire-drill.
What amazes me is even if you "hubturn" CAN you have to go through the "drill".
On my last visit I asked if I could just stay in the airplane and have the FO go in to get the paperwork? I was told there is no difference, all personnel MUST go through their immigration check in/check out proceedure which usually takes longer to complete than preparing to go operate the next leg of an international flight!
