I'm ex Empire, but Fedex left a bad taste in my mouth. I'll say some of the Fedex pilots weren't overly friendly to us in the shuttles heading to the airplane in Oakland and I guess it jaded me a bit toward the whole pilot group.
I went to UPS.

I sure wish that weren't true. I knew a few of the Barron guys out of AFW and some of them drove regional jets for UA, DL, etc before FedEx. I met a guy older than sin that was an former check airman for UA on the 747 and was now flying a Caravan.

Z,
Did you come straight from Empire to trunk? I have met a couple Empire and one Mountain Air, but all did a stint in between the feeder and trunk, so they interviewed while at the intermediary stop. They also said they knew of only a couple that interviewed while at a feeder. I found the whole thing kind of bizarre. Can't come up with an explanation as to why the company would not take advantage of the experience.

I too, did another stunt in between Empire and FedEx... So that might be the key!!??
As to the other guy (UPS guy formerly with Empire), sorry to hear that about the FE guys not being nice. Unfortunately we, like all other large airlines, have our share of jack@@es! Sorry this happened to you, but trust me, it was nothing personal or that you were a "feeder" guy...
cheers

Way back when, I was told (and do not know if it is true or not) that in addition to owning the feeder aircraft, that FedEx also pays for the Feeder pilot training. Thus they don't want to hire someone that will incur additional training costs at the Feeder. If FedEx is hiring and no one else is, this might be true in the short term, but in the long term it all washes out as we hire other folk's feeders, and they hire ours.
It's been my observation that, below the very very top, FedEx management is FULL of short term thinkers. Dunno, maybe that's all Fred lets 'em do.
