My kids were both in school in Munich last year. My wife went to private school growing up over there.... she is Austria. I also have a friend who is a headmaster of a school up north... what do you want to know? Please feel free to PM me too.

That's roughly $16,000 per child. Also found it is illegal to homeschool in Germany. Only exemption...active duty military. Anyone have any new insights or knowledge??

I thought we fixed it this time. 68% thought that we did anyway.

My biggest concern is the cost. I'm sure the schools are good. I've found that it cost around 12,000 Euro per child and with two children that would be about $32,000 a year. I was looking for info to see if this cost is true all around Cologne, Bonn, or Dusseldorf.

Do yourself and your kids a favor by putting them in a regular German school. It's a lot cheaper, and your kids will be fluent speakers within a year.

I know this first hand. I was placed directly into a school in Stuttgart with only German speakers for my 6th grade year, and left a year later fluent in German.

The only thing my aunt did "extra" was hire an occasional German tutor...

So go for full immersion - culture and language - for your kids if you're lucky enough to get based in Cologne.

Nope, there are 2 other choices, 0 and 1!

I flew at Spangdahlem and there were a couple of civilian sim instructors that placed their kids in the base school (DOD school). They had to pay for it, but I believe it was well below the number you quoted for Colgne schools. If you wanted to live two hours south of Cologne in some nice little village serviced by the DOD school bus system, it may be something to consider. Much like Freight Dog's story, I have buddies that put their kiddos into German schools with great results as well.

Yeah, I thought of that. Geilenkirchen air base is just one hour west. I called the school and they said it is $22,000 per year per student. I asked if there were any discounts for prior military or retired military and they sadly said no. I was excited about the DOD schools til then.

Would Geilenkirchen have DOD schools? It is a NATO base, not USAF.
