Something to consider for stretching your $$$ while living there as an expat is that if the radius allows you to live close enough to a U.S. military facility, your wife could probably get a job, part time or full time, on post, with a contractor, or with the schools which would result in logistical support - PX, Commissary, Fuel Ration, etc, and in the case of the school, I "think" employee's children are allowed to attend. I know full time teacher's kids attend, not sure about subs or admin staff.
