If in fact that's what happens, then "we" have nobody but "ourselves" to blame. I agree that we seem to have "spent" some negotiating capital on the FDA's, but perhaps when the "real" negotiations begin, what's left will be spent on everyone else. Again, I agree that here, past performance does indicate future performance. A testimony to our thoroughly disenfranchised and non-caring crew force.

I'm over here now...1.42 for the Euro with a whopping 19% VAT tax on everything. Our dollar goes nowhere!

Having been an ex-patriot pilot for over 20 years I loved living overseas despite the obvious problems. In fact most of the families loved it too and they would go back having the chance to do so. If I could head back overseas with the position I now hold I would, in a minute, no questions asked.
As for pay and the dollar, I cannot understand for the life of me why the union didn't push for dollar protection. When I first went to Japan the dollar was 164yen/$1. Our salary was locked into that rate and when the dollar dropped our pay went up. By the time it hit 100yen to the dollar I was making as much in the spread as I was with the 65 hr. guarantee. Maybe the union should look into dollar protection.

YES!! That's precisely what a COLA is. It's protected from fluctuations of the dollar. It's frustrating that we work for one of the biggest, best companies in the world and lesser companies are compensating their overseas employees much better. It should be an embarrasment to the company. Talked to a guy at Koch industries and they pay their kids schools and use a COLA system.

The union did, and got it. It's in the TA:

c) Cost of Living Protection for Rental Allowance
The U.S. Department of State Foreign Maximum Per Diem Rate (MPDR) for each FDA location shall be sampled on March 1, 2011, which will establish the Baseline Maximum Per Diem Rate (BMPDR). On the first business day of each subsequent calendar quarter, the MPDR for each FDA shall be sampled. If the applicable MPDR on that day varies from the BMPDR by more than 10%, the Company shall adjust the applicable rental allowance by the percentage change in the MPDR. The adjustment shall be effective beginning with the first full bid period that begins at least 15 days after the sampling. Any adjustment shall be announced via FCIF.

Website with numbers:

U.S. Department of State | Welcome to Office of Allowances

From what I have been told by a person with a vested interest in the matter as well as solid math skills, Paris (if opened today) would have an allowance of approx 4400 per month (using the TA's formula applied to the TA's 3500 base line)

Disclaimer: Please don't construe this post to imply I think the new TA is great. Just saying there is some currency protection in the form of the above multiplier.

They only got it for housing.....not the for the buying power of the rest of your paycheck.

Even the military has separate Overseas Housing Allowances (OHA) based on local cost and currency fluctuations, PLUS a Cost of Living Allowance (COLA) to protect the rest of your paycheck from currency fluctuations.

It was all brought up to the union in the summer of 2007 when the first FDA LOA was being debated.

We got half.

So Cologne is opening up? What is everybody's guess in Junior/Senior?

The fiancee lives in Copenhagen and has a great job with SAS. Also have the green light from the ex to take the kids to Europe. Working in Germany for a U.S. company would be great. Guess it is time to work on the FEX written.
