I'm trying not to be a sea lawyer but, what you describe is not a deviation expsense but rather an allowable use of you deviation bank for staging into MEM

OK, here it is:
The IRS considers any reimbursement from the company for you to travel between your home of record and your domicile to be taxable income. The specific example given today was if you live in DFW, have extra money in your deviation bank and then decide to use that money to buy a ticket to MEM (your domicile) for a sim period, then that is taxable.
ALPA hired a tax attorney to research this and to figure out how to draft the language to appease the company and keep them from making the change in the computer to automatically do this. FDX was in the process of programming the payroll computer to pick up any ticket it saw from your home of record to your domicile as pay and deduct the appropriate taxes.
This statement simply doesn't apply that often. It doesn't apply to the above mentioned pilot if his trip finishes in ORD and he either goes to DFW or MEM from there on a deviation ticket.

don't let him fool u..i sat right next to him and he has changed his tune..after the road show he was satisfied..at least that is what i deducted from all his cheering and waving...this is a good deal...so let's see if we can screw this all up and vote NO...we pilots tend to be such great businessmen!

Anyone for lunch in ATL on Saturday? I'm finishing a trip and will be at the ATL show...
I imagine there are "perks" to the contract that aren't obvious at first reading. Sounds like the roadshow is pointing some of those out...

So far, I'm "Yes". I'll decide for sure after the roadshow. None of my showstoppers are in it.
