I would like to add one thing also. One of the biggest reason (probably THE biggest) reason that I made the decision to leave a legacy airline gig to come to UPS was for what I perceived as stability at UPS.

Do not make the same mistake I did.

There is no extra job security for a new hire at UPS compared to any other airline.

Anyone looking at UPS should strike "stability" from their reasons to come to UPS (or any airline for that matter). This is just another airline job at best. There existed the false perception that UPS was the safe and stable place to be for even a junior crew member. I'm pretty sure everyone realizes that was wrong. You may also want to look at the retirement numbers. There is NO bubble in the UPS seniority list. No growth any time soon coupled with outsourcing and continued shrinkage will make for a painfully slow climb in quality of life. Just some thoughts from a guy furloughed by big brown.

Job security and UPS definitely do not go hand in hand. Regardless of which side of the fence you find yourself on. If you come to the Big Brown Machine, make sure you have a solid plan B to fall back on. DO NOT be the sole breadwinner in your family and come to UPS. If UPS starts furloughing again, I will find myself on the street living underneath a bridge in ANC...or perhaps in Bahrain.

can you please state what is "best"

delta 777 pay rates of 2001 in 2009 dollars $347.01 per hour

ups 747-400 pay rates in 2009 dollars $237.16 per hour

ups pilots would require a 46% pay increase to equal what a delta pilot made flying their largest equipment.

Airbum,
Tisthe salient point.
Personally, do not consider pay the final determinant of an outstanding or even best contract. Pay me a million dollars an hour matters little if have no future or the quality of life puts you in an early grave.
Unfortunately, many use the $ as the apples to apples metric.

APC lists Deltas top pay as 217 an hour don't know where you got 347.
You will make more at UPS in your second year then after 8 at Delta. I know because I've been there done that.

Last time I checked, this is 2011. What matters is what is 777 pay in 2011, not 2001.

salty I would agree that hourly rates are not everything. My personal lean is towards dollars because I'm in this for the money, but not to others its not the most important issue.

It always seems to me that the non $ improvements in a contract with ups seem rather tricky to nail down. As a example I give the jumpseat matrix, 4 years of grievances on how it would be enforced. it has been a improvement with out benefit for years that cost negotiation capital. Don't get me wrong I like the idea of the matrix just not how these things are ummmm misinterpreted by mgt.

upsfo,

I was attempting to contrast the pay in Delta's 2001 contract per Cougars comment (using hourly pay only):

I would agree that the current Delta contract pays less per hour then the UPS current contract in 2011. However in 2001 Delta's top scale was 46% higher then UPS's current pay in inflation based dollars or as close as I could get to 2011 using a inflation calculator on the internet.
