All the possible names have been pretty funny. I needed a laugh like that.
I assumed that the wings meant he was someone special in a former life, but that's just it. It was a former life. While agree that the uniform policy isn't followed closely (I've seen ties from the the baseball team in the World Series or the football team in the Super Bowl), I find wearing ones old military wings a bit odd. He should be proud of what he used to be, but that means nothing at FedEx. He is just another widebody Capt. I have yet to see a former Capt from USAirways, United, AA, etc wearing any piece of uniform from their former job. Does this bother me? Not really. I find it comical more than anything. Like maybe I should have saluted him or something. I don't wear the badge of the uniform police so I don't really care.
OK, here's the deal. If you don't know what it means, then don't worry about it. There. Feel better. Seriously, I'm sure you've seen the many varied pieces of "uniform" that are worn, every day, in the AOC. I personally believe it's part of the comic relief of the system. It helps guys become distracted from the really lousy things, like reserve or 4A-2-b, or those greasy hamburgers served in the Buffeteria.
There are many reasons why said captain might have been wearing those wings, but the most obvious is that he was wearing his military wings for the same reason why a dog licks his balls....because he can. Pure and simple. It's part of the corporate culture of FedEx, to not stir the pot. That's why you see a two or three man crew, with not one piece of matching "uniform" between them. It's why guys can wear ratty looking clothing or show up for work unshaven, or wear a Santa Clause tie in the middle of June. In other words, it's one of the things that we all love most about the FedEx piloting experience.

Like I said, it's comic relief. I agree with you that those wings have nothing to do with his job at FedEx, and of course he shouldn't be wearing them, but hey, how different is what he's doing from someone (at Delta) running their cockpit with a hand puppet, or someone from US Airways wearing a locomotive engineers hat and blowing a train whistle, and then announcing, over the PA system, the departure of the flight from "Track 11"? Maybe it just helps the guy stay on an even keel. Who knows. As for being someone special in a former life, well, earning AF Command Pilot wings, is like becoming senior at FedEx. It just happens with time. Nothing really special about that.

The guy at Delta was commanding his cockpit with his hand puppet long before our puppetmaster was through puberty. FedElta, it was long before your time there. Last I heard (from the guys F/O) he was sitting in the chief pilot's office, explaining himself. This would be back in the mid-90's.
