I was told that it may not be worth it with our existing insurance?
This is crazy, we can land an airplane in zero vis, but, I can't figure out what insurance coverages I need!
The problem is that it's really a very personal thing and as such, you are for the most part on your own in the decision-making process. One of the ways you might proceed is to talk with certified financial planner, who would be able to examine your family financials and then offer you an opinion as to whether STD insurance would be prudent for your situation. Unfortunately, it's like a lot of things, in that there doesn't seem to be a clear solution that fits everyone the same.

I passed on the short term dis. since you have sick banks and vacation to cover most things. I would protect yourself for the worst with LTD + supplemental.

I'm pretty sure our insurance will cover an STD.

How is the supplemental covered? Is that outside the company and ALPA?

Concur with JJ. It's all what level of risk you're comfortable with, individually. Personally, I go out-of-pocket for the Harvey Watt/ALPA LTD, and that's it.

FWIW, my dad told me: "The two nicest, most well-furnished buildings you're likely to see are: 1) a casino, and 2) an insurance company's headquarters. And they're not paying the light bill with their 'own' money, either."

Hopefully, when presented with a valid claim, an insurance company would promptly pay the amount covered. Sadly, that is sometimes the exception and not the rule (Can you say "flood damage" vs. "rip off the roof and then rain pours in damage."?) And trying to wade through the legalese and disclaimers and exceptions in ANY coverage policy is enough to give anyone a helmet fire. Having said that, I have always been impressed with USAA's auto claims service.

Aetna administered thru ALPA. Harvey Watt was the previous admin.
