There is no COLA. The Company will give you $2700/month for housing. They way I understand it; if you rent an apt for 2700, have 3 roommates and split the cost, if all 3 are on the lease agreement, all 3 will get 2700/month.

FedEx is a great job. But don't sell this FDA BS...

BTW, your training does not count as part of the 2 years, you have to activate first. And you still have to be senior enough to bid back. Longer than two years.
If you look at my post I was describing my opinion only as to what I would recommend for a new-hire who is on the outside and trying to get a seniority number. Fortunately for me the decision isn't the same since I'm already here; my decision would be widebody FO MEM/ANC/HGK to which I think is a different set of options than a new hire would have. I went to ANC and commuted there for 4 years (many wouldn't take the job with that commute at the time) 2 years up there went by in the blink of an eye and so will HGK in my opinion. You would have to get used to living in a smaller place than we are used to here in the USA that's a given (probably 1200 sq feet, but they don't waste space in those apartments). Most of the guys that I have talked to that are doing it are fine with it. If you want to chip in another 500-1000 bucks you can live in a pretty nice place with real nice view of the ocean. I am hoping to see a better LOA in the future that would help with the kids school and some additional housing money.

Now with all of that said, the company has set a precedent and allowed guys to bid on postings prior to 2 years and they are being put at the bottom of the training letter until after their 2 year commitment. This is a good thing for anyone who wants to come back after 2 years. They should have the ability to do that if they are at the end of a training letter. That way the 2 years shouldn't turn into 3-4 years if we have a normal bidding future ahead of us.

Thanks,

How does HKG work if you're a reservist?

Because they want to test your desire to go the extra mile. Who knows why?
It's because our POI doesn't want to recognize/accept what the FAR's say on the FE written and it's his fiefdom. It's nowhere near as deep as some are making it out to be.

I don't do this but I have been around many who have. It is probably not a good idea to bid HKG with the intent of commuting and juggling a reserve job. As difficult as this is in the US it is even moreso in HKG as there is a keen competition for jumpseats to/fro, on our planes and offline. As hiring increases and a potential MD-11 base is opened, those coveted seats will be even more scarce. I have heard HKG-based pilots complain to union reps about the lack of commuting options, i.e., company-paid tickets not being offered more often. The impending movement of HKG-based pilots annual recurrent training, from MEM to China, will also take away a company-paid round-trip that is currently enjoyed by HKG-based pilots.

However, two key issues which prompted pilots to bid HKG early on have been removed; first, 4A2B is no longer in play. Second, the effects of age 60 rule change is nearing the 5 year point so that attrition should return to normal.

With that said, my opinion is that if you don't want to bid HKG taking into account the negatives that come with it, then DON'T. If you do bid HKG with the expectation of commuting, it will be challenging and difficult. Do so at "your own" risk.

Bottom line: do the research.

Thanks,

But what if no one has HKG on their bid when you try to bid out? I don't think the company will let you out without a replacement.

In essence the profile form is the application. If/when you are invited for an interview you will be sent an actual "application form" to fill out and send in prior to the interview. I spilled beer all over mine (d-oh!!) but still got hired.
