I had the pleasure to experience some of the flying that FedEx had us (World) do for the last few months. I really thought it was a "top notch" operation in all of the stations that we flew through, and everyone seemed professional, motivated, helpful and kind. The trips were kind of ball-busters, but seem very productive from a pilot's stand point.
I have a few questions for you guys if don't mind entertaining me.
1) What is life like as a no seniority SO; Minimum days off, schedules, training pay etc.?
The S/O reserve lines for Jan all work 15 days; it varies from blocks of 5 x 3, 4 X 3 and 3 X 1, block of 15.
2) Is there any kind of commuting policy?
Get to Mem, If you get a trip that starts with a DH you can use the DH bank to commute from home. A player after you can hold a line. Commuting is really pretty easy if you live one hop from MEM and dont live where a bunch of Navy guys retire.
3) How long could one be... stuck... in the back of the 72?
No one knows. I dont think it will be more than a year unless you are the last guy hired.
4) Is there any knowledge of future fleet plans? Are the 72s, -10s and -11 sticking around for the foreseeable future? Are 75s to take over 72s routes?
75s are taking over 72 routes.
5) How does reserve work as a 72 SO? Is MEM the only 72 base? Can you work a week to 10 days on and a week off or is there a more typical type of sched for SO reserve? With a little seniority you probably can.
Thanks in advance! There are so many FDX threads and not really anything new for potential new hires beside this one.

Thanks for the interest!
I do have a question for you because I saw the aircraft parked on the ramp:
Can you list a "typical" pairing that you called a "ball-buster"?
I think you would be surprised that what you flew might be a "normal" trip pairing that is awarded internationally on the MD-11. Just curious!

It was an 8 day trip starting in MEM with a ETD around 0330. MEM-ANC-TPE-HKG-ANC-IND. All with 24 hrs or a little less for the layovers. The time of departure kept getting later and later in the day each leg. My 8 day trip included commercial flights and layovers to MEM and from IND to home.
I get at least 12 days off a month, 14 most of the time, but would love to be more productive on the road for pay and spend more at home.
Don't get me wrong, I loved it. Almost 5 years here, I get a little tired of 4 day layovers all over the world, when I could be spending that down time doing things I want to be doing at HOME. We get paid 4.8 hrs a day when not flying, but I'd rather get it done and have more time off.

During the last Traning/Standards meeting in September, the new VP (JG) mentioned that hotels for a limited period of time were being considered. The idea being that starting class & coordinating a possible move while ensuring one's family was taken care of might be better handled if a place to stay were taken care of for the first couple of weeks.

I've been in the back four years and generally I don't have any complaints. Sure, I'd like to see some contract and pay improvements, but overall things are much better than where I was before. Worse comes to worse, the 727 is slowly (some say quickly) going away, and at some point the S/O list will be populated only by the over 65 crowd. I doubt you will have to spend as much time on the panel as I did.

However, I would not check the box if it says "Do you have a current FEw?" if you do not. If its just a date put that in there.

Well, I may be over exaggerating a little. We get used to 24hr to 6 day layovers around here on the 11; Mostly 2-3 day layovers. I actually stated, on that trip, that I wished we had more productive pairings here at World. Hard to do on the ACMI side when your 15 AC are spread out all over the world.

I think it is a typical 8 day trip.
You go "around the world" on 12-14 day trips. Here, MEM - Asia - IND really isn't "around the world."
A six day layover? Without duty periods as Hotel STBY? Airport STBY? Really. Only if a volcano!!
Heard you guys behind us over NOPAC, only knew it was World was the position report.....then you taxiied into the Rock Star parking in ANC.
Thanks for the info....

I hope you werent' refering to me....I was advising the Lad against indicating that he had a FeW before he actually took the test. My advise is much as yours. Just do whatever it takes to get it done ASAP. If you are that interested in FDX....the time to get it was yesterday.

I'm sorry to parse words but does Current FE Turbojet Rating or written (FEX or Basic/turbojet) mean if you have a FE turbojet rating you must be current? i.e. 50 hours in last year or current check ride. I have the rating and about 630 hours at the panel from about 10 years ago. I'll go out and re-take the test if I need to. Can I even do that if I have the rating already?
Thanks
Thanks
