You're either old or you fly regional jets.
Brilliant.

You are missing something. The only time the flight deck is on the centerline (especially in a widebody) is after proceeding down a straightaway for a couple of hundred feet. Before, during, and after the turn the person taxiing (the Captain) must use what's called judgmental oversteer. Purely a judgment call by the guy on the tiller. If the rest of the crew piped up every time we appeared to be off centerline, we'd never go anywhere.

I have, and will speak up if I feel that a gear truck or an engine may become jeopardized on the right side of the aircraft. But I can't do a thing about the left side.

A turn like the one in the LBHP incident is in the hands of the Captain's judgment.

Flightmech,

Because you usually have well thought out input for this forum, I'll do my best to keep this as nice as possible ...

Please don't tell me how to fly (or taxi) the airplane and I'll do my best not to tell you how to repair the machine. Deal?

I see you have been reading Mark's post. 5%er. I would hope that the FO RFO jumpseater would say something if they saw a deviation from normal. Sight picture is sight picture.

How do you all know that the F/O and/or RFO didn't say something?

I stepped on the brakes once while the capt was taxiing when I was a 727 F/O...Tha capt asked what I was doing? I told him he was scaring me. That was the end of that conversation. He slowed down. (to about 50kts)

Mayday,

Sorry if i've offended you, or anyone else come to that, there was no intention but i have seen pictures of the airplane position shot towards the nose. I am fully aware than when taxiing (i do fairly often) that judgemental oversteer has to be used, after all you are 16 feet ahead of the nose gear. I have several times had the nervous feeling when over the grass in the cockpit with the nose gear still on terra-firma at some stands at my own station. It almost looks as if the double yellow was identified as the centreline in this case.

Anyway, I'm certainly wasn't telling you how to fly/operate your jet and would never intend to. My orignal comment was more of a CRM question only. I will respectfully leave it at that.

By the way "Deal"

I'm not sure what happened in Budapest with this incident either, but it could have been something as simple as the flight crew getting distracted with switching plates on the EFB's, looking for traffic on final, or any other number of issues. We should all try to refrain from Monday morning quarterbacking this thing (as tempting as it might be on this kind of "mishap"). Hopefully, we'll find out what happened if there is ever some kind of report published.
BTW, the the MD-11 flight crew sits 21 feet forward of the nose gear, and 102 feet forward of the main gear.

This is just an observation, but it seems to me that all of you guys here on Flightinfo are becoming rather thin-skinned.

I think I will go hang out in the line shack with FlightMech.

Cheers,
