Should you check VIPS?
So, you're about to start your trip, and it begins with a DeadHead. The phone just rang, and you chose NOT to answer it because the Caller ID said it was FedEx CRS (Crew Resource Scheduling). Should you sign on to pilot.fedex.com and see what's going on?
I wouldn't recommend it.
Jack's most recent FCIF (trust me, don't sign in and get hooked) says that trips are being revised. Trips that begin with a deadhead will now have an earlier showtime.
To quote:
" If you have a deadhead, plan on showing 2 hours prior to departure. This is the only notice you'll see on this since it's not a real revision. The pairing will be rebuilt to show this...."
Oh, really?!?! So, since when did an FCIF suffice as notice of a change in a pairing, and since when is a new showtime NOT a revision?!?!
If you have a 1400 showtime, your only obligation is to scan your fingerprint at 1400 - - not a second earlier. You don't have to answer a phone, and you don't have to check FCIFs, and you don't have to check VIPS. If you check in and find that the showtime was changed to 30 minutes "ago," that's not your problem. If CRS chose to remove you, so be it. Make sure you look at Section 25.H. Substitution before you call 'em. You're not eligible for SUB unless the showtime has been moved up at least 1 hour. If you ARE eligible for substitution (because they moved it up an hour), you don't have to accept a SUB trip, or a RAT. ANY of the above actions amounts to doing MORE than 100.0% of your job.

Listen to Father Tony !
HERE is a REAL case of 'ignorance is bliss'. . you have your schedule, you know what it is. Just STICK to it.
If you get bit by the 'curiosity bug' and log in to see what might be up . . it is the same as answering the phone. Big Brother's GOT YOU!
Don't make it easy for them to continue the contract stalemate.

So, flying a sub trip means you are flying 100% of your BLG. Nothing more, nothing less.

Checking VIPS is allowable if you click on your calendar and not the button however, they know you've been there. I prefer having a friend with days off to check it for me...yes I do have my calendar viewable.
Now on another topic for Drew, IMHO Drew you need to get a life. You're done man, you put in your time so reap the rewards. Staying immersed in this stress will just let the company win again by putting you in the grave sooner and not having to pay the pension an extra day. I'd rather they pay! I love you man and all that you did, but catch a fish for me or something. This is meant as concern for your welfare and if you want to keep subjecting yourself to this bull then that's your choice and I respect that, but you deserve more enjoyment in retirement than rehashing all this crap til you die.
No offence intended.

None taken . .except the 'biteme' part
I am not going out of my way to 'stay tuned' in.
My wife has got me doing this 'movie' project on my brand new PowerMac G5 Quad. We have got boxes and boxes of VHS tapes that we started filming when we were pregnant with daughter #1 (who is now 26) . .she kept bugging me to get these on DVD, before the tape got so old and brittle that it couldn't be played any more.
So, as I sit here feeding tape into the computer hard drive, I have time to kill -and thought maybe I could say -or add something to get the 'no loads' to figure out it was in their best long term interest to do whatever it takes to get a good contract.
I'm not loosing any sleep over it . .or creating excess stomach acid. .you guys are going to do what you are going to do. I just enjoy pouring gas on it
And you are right . .the combination of the FedEx and Navy retirement brings in about the same paycheck (sans DRF) that I was making working for a living. That, the free and clear rental properties and the stock make for quite a comfortable living. NOT TO MENTION . .I kept the original issue spouse.
So . .thanks for the concern . .and be advised I plan to out live Fred . .on his nickle
I just wish you guys would all buckle down and get the job done. I was one of the 13% who voted against the 1st contract. I hope you can do moah bettah this time around . . SOON!
Besides . . you really wouldn't want to eat the damn fish you might catch in the waters hereabouts.

Tony, you are correct that you aren't required to accept a sub assignment. However, if you are offered a sub assignment that meets the contractual requirements, in order to be paid, you have to fly the offered trip or become eligible for OTP. Once OTP is chosen, you are pay protected for 2 bid periods. But, in order to keep your pay, you have to fly those hours at some point if you turned down the initial trip offered.
So, flying a sub trip means you are flying 100% of your BLG. Nothing more, nothing less.
Why not accept OTP, let them look for someone else to fly the trip that needs to be filled NOW, and pick another trip to fly when YOU feel like it?
Now, don't get me wrong. I'm not going to condemn anyone that accepts a SUB trip, or even that goes along with a schedule change. Your decisions are personal decisions. I'm telling you what I would do. Just remember, our personal decisions make a difference at the Negotiating table. When jets don't move, negotiations will.
Which reminds me... reference Jack's email about deviation failures... who are the boneheads accepting the field drafts? Sure, it's tempting to earn a few extra bucks for a trip that starts in your hometown and gets you back for dinner tomorrow. But wouldn't you rather have a 10% pay raise and 8% retro before Halloween? Individual greed can only hurt us.

While it is true that flying the sub trip would earn you only 100% of the pay your line guarantees, it would also be doing scheduling a favor by filling a hole that they have. My point is that you would be inconveniencing yourself, flying a trip for which you had made no plans, simply to satisfy THEIR needs.

Anybody else I assume can read the post I made, which included using the OTP to make up the hours at their leisure. If anybody gives them grief, they can quickly be educated.
Nobody is asking anybody to sacrifice pay -- that would be unfair. What is FAIR is for everyone to contribute 100.0% to the Company.
No less.
No more.

Just a question, but if you have already logged onto vips and read Jack's FCIF, are you now obligated to show 2 hours prior? It doesn't affect me personally, but I am just wondering about the company possibly taking hostages for "disobeying the boss" so to speak. What is everyone's opinion on that, because it seems that the union has even given kudos to Jack for getting the word out to everyone so quickly.

Maybe you will have a contract by then and you can do the MU at the (hopefully increased) new pay rate. . the idea is to park jets NOW . .and make them reconsider their bad faith at the table.
