Does anyone know what the signing bonus/retro pay check amounted to for Captains and FO's when UPS signed their last contract? I had heard it was a considerable sum. How long, after their amendable date, did it take to get a signed contract? In other words, was the retro pay check a 100% recoup of the wages lost while the company dragged out contract talks?
Has any other pilot group received a retro pay check for signing an agreement after the amendable date of their contract, and if so what was the amount?

A signing bonus is a bribe from the company to enduce the union membership to overlook undesirable issues in a proposed contract. They hope you will be short sighted and not look at the big picture. It is usually a red flag that the proposed contract is a dog.
Retro pay is a push from the union for the company to not drag their feet in negotiations.

I don't even know if it would work, but one way to "push" the company with some force over the retro issue is to have a "retro clause" already negotiated into the expiring agreement.
A day late and a dollar short ... this time.

ALPA led the way with forgiving companies of their retro pay obligations, so don't blame the IPA for missing that target in 2006.

With all due respect how much frickin' money do you think you deserve!!?? You make 250K per year and get 2 weeks off a month. Cry me a river, but that's ridiculous. We have the best contract anywhere and you/we got a substantial signing bonus. In light of what the economy has done, the 2008 UPS/IPA contract was the deal of the century for us (the IPA).
Do you not have friends at the pax carriers or FDX? There are plenty of things to complain about regarding UPS, but the contract is certainly not one of them.

Retro Pay is an a push for the company to get a contract done. A signing bonus is a bribe to hide a contract that is flawed.
