Then why not offer early retirement???? IPA and UPS split the cost of the package and reduce or hopefully eliminate the furlough?
Could you explain what card carrying FQS' would solve? The FQS would have protection but wouldn't that reak havoc on the seniority list? Wouldn't the seniority go by hire date? If more are to be furloughed then wouldn't it push more IPS guys that were not FQS' out the door?

Why not offer early retirement? Because it's cheaper to furlough and some (many?) guys end up staying anyway.
Go over to the FDX threads. Guys are staying because their VEBA (for healthcare expenses) doesn't cover 100% of their healthcare before turning 65. Flash a crisp new $1 in front of these folks and they'll sign up for another year of nights in the hub. "New" over 65 SOs are checking out every month too.
Our early retirement incentives have been a complete waste of money

Perhaps ups wants to keep the over 60 folks hoping the furloughed pilots never come back. This would solve their problem of disgruntled pilots holding grudge.

I can't imagine sitting down next to them and believing any number they give us on what our portion of the early retirement would cost.
