FDX - Posting 10-02 Practice Bid 1....
#2
Seriously thinking of becoming part of the problem and bidding the right seat of a wide-body. After almost 12 years in the left seat and on the heels of what management can do to your income under 4a2b, perhaps it's time to take the 4th stripe off and protect my earnings potential and QOL.
Seeing some folks junior to me making ALOT more and working fewer days than my current seat has me seriously contemplating this move.
Anybody else on board with this line of thought?

OK, before you actually do that, just make sure that you can afford, both financially as well as psychologically, the seat change. Can we assume that you're in the left seat of the 727? If so, you're right in that there's more money to be had as a senior First Officer in a widebody, than there is as a junior Jurassic Jet Captain. However, that said, some guys would never switch to a right seat because their egos wouldn't let them. It's a tough decision, one that's complicated by the two-year freeze. Regardless, good luck with your decision. We're all counting on you.

convair,
You could make more cash as a senior widebody FO. Depends on your seniority, a junior 727 Captain will not necessarily be a senior FO. If you aren't top 25% or so, you won't always get lots of carryover. Also, you have to work more hours to make the same money. Some senior FO trips can be shortened by deviating on the front/back. After 4.a.2.b, I'd take the captain position.

Another thought is that if for some reason god forbid you go out on a medical, your disability pay is based on your captain pay rate vs your first officer pay rate. Another facet in the equation....

I was forced to the FO seat in ANC after being in the left seat for 3 years and let me tell you it is a very hard adjustment. As for the making more money part, I'm not too sure of that, I am VERY sr. in the right seat and I am working twice as hard trying to make up lost pay and I don't like it. My trips may be nicer but I am working as many or more days every month. As for draft, I am just now getting calls and they always seem to come when I need to be at home and I have to turn them down. What ever you do make sure you think hard about it because you may be there awhile.
