Retire on Sick List?

Retire on Sick List?
Curious if this is the new standard for disgruntled pilots? Had a buddy do it at NW (pre-merger). I understand for health reasons it may be required. Thoughts?

I've heard from several that are close to retirement that said do not retire while in sick status. Can't remember the reason why. Be in well status before official retirement date.

I only wish it were so, but my total claim to fame is the fact that I woke up in the hospital, after being dead, and after open heart surgery, where they did 5 bypasses, decided to not return to work. Although I'm lucky in that I've got my military retirement, and a retirement from when I was an assistant vice president at a life insurance company, and will eventually start taking my social security, and am on long term disability with the company, I was never a "disgruntled pilot", and believe it or not, I didn't plan the being dead part, nor frankly did I really plan my retirement. I just worked hard, stayed in the same house that I was in when I got hired, and of course, kept the same old wife. All those things have certainly helped me to live an almost worry-free life. Except for those damn chipmunks who are burrowing everywhere around my stone walls and patio.
However, I don't know anything about retiring while on sick status, because that wasn't my situation. One of the questions I'd ask, especially if one has sick bank hours remaining, is why retire when you can continue to get full pay. Pay that you have earned, and pay that you would loose if you retired while out sick. I'm not advocating putting in a false claim to try to get on short or long term disability, because that's not only against the law, but is morally wrong as well. But I have to tell you, this long term disability comes with plenty of surprises. As an example, just last week I received in the mail, a packet, with a letter from FedEx, congratulating me of my 20 years of service, and would I please be so kind as to let them know, via email, phone, or fax, which award I would like them to send me. After long study, I picked the spacestation 70x800 refractor telescope. The better to see Memphis from here in Connecticut.

See, that's the whole problem with you young guys. Once you reach my age, there's no reason to watch the time, because there's really nothing left to be on-time for, unless of course you watch NASCAR or World Wrestling stuff. Besides, I've already got one of those clocks.
