While UPS furloughs, FedEx grows
#11
UPS is a huge company that has been around for a long time & will continue to be around for a long time. They are very good at what they do or else they would be gone by now. Are they losing market share & how will present day decisions be reflected in the future? Who knows. Many legacy passanger carriers are gone or have merged. I believe UPS will have to step on it big time to be gone in 5 or 10 years. Not that it can't happen but I would not bet on it.
I think this thread is getting a little off track. I don't think anyone here, or in their right mind, would ever accuse UPS of being close to going out of business...they are net even remotely close.
What is in question is how they are running there airline air express division, which is baffling to say the least. Healthy competition is always best for business and I am praying that they get there act together and get back in the game. I am rooting for UPS pilots and for the unfortunate crew members on furlough and pray that management figures out how to drum up some new business.

I don't think that you UPS'ers (you pilots anyway) have anything to worry about relative to your company going out of business, because they have more reserve cash than the Vatican. However, that said, I'd caution you to differentiate between the UPS Ground operation and your Air side, because from what has been happening to you, I'd not bet the farm that UPS Air will continue at it's current or former size. However, I believe the company is as strong as any US company, bar none. So hopefully if you can continue to put up with all the grief your company heaps on you, you should be able to finish out your careers there. If that's what you want.

If UPS has so much extra loot that they are tripping over their money bags, why did they recently receive a credit rating warning because their pensions are underfunded? Sorry, I don't have time to find a link to the financial article. Google it. Also, why did Davis embark on a plan to increase UPS' debt, leveraging its book value, for stock buy backs, the Worldport expansion, ect ..., rather than just pay cash? Again, I wish I had time to dig up the old article. Jetjok reminds me of the Air Force friend who bragged in 2000 that "American Airlines has more money than God." It was probably right before they bought TWA. People are greedy and prone to error by nature. Many of those who are particularly greedy and stupid rise to corporate leadership. Those of us who depend on their leadership for a paycheck need to be pragmatic and well educated to anticipate the logical conclusion of the path they take.

To assist UPS pilots understand their employer, consider this. UPS worships the Small Package God. Not the Truck God like some believe or the Airplane God like most pilots and FedEx. At FedEx, airplanes = good. At UPS, airplanes = bad. We're just a very small but necessary tool that helps UPS worship their Small Package God.

My feelings are that us purple "pukes" are extremely lucky to have FS. In the sense that he created FedEx, is FedEx, and he wants it to do well because it is his baby. Unfortunately for most other airlines, the guys running the show dont have their name and reputation at stake as much. When they crash an airline, they take their golden parachute $$ and bug out. SD is not going to bankrupt the company. What he and the BOD of directors are currently engaged in is waging the future of the company on a cost structure that is defensive in the extreme. Top to bottom. Funny thing is, if they really needed to save money, why would the leader of the company give himself a 675% pay raise? Seems like a mixed signal to me.
If you look at the logistics cost per pound UPS is the best rated company when it comes to $$$. Many analysts are now realizing that the reason it is so far off the scale compared to other companies is they are not spending ANY money on expansion. All this cost cutting will eventually lead to some where. Maybe it is not where they want. Maybe it is. Who knows.
They are starting to think they are too big to fail. Never happened before right? What about the safety factor?
There are already 91 pilots on furlough here. The way this whole thing was handled is just beyond words. The way it is currently being handled is.....well, you just have to be going through it.
I hope everyone who is on the street finds a job. Those that are gonna come back I hope we get recalled soon.
