Fedex couldn't put themselves into bankruptcy if their life depended on it. They make money despite themselves.

Oh yah???? What if the big earthquake on the New Madrid Fault occurs and swallows our fleet? Or simultaneous tornadoes hit the MEM, IND, AFW, CDG and CAN hubs? Or, the giant asteroid that comes is successfully split in two by the oil well drillers....But, only half of it misses Earth and the other half slams into MEM? Or a plague of frogs comes and overruns MEM? (There is a pyramid there, you know?)

I don't think you've thought this through.

What are you guys worried about the stimulus will kick in any minute.

On the bright side the exchange rate is looking good. $2400 bucks might be enough for that CDG apartment.

Great article on this website, APC a few months ago written by a UPS guy (let's hire him for our R&I) about DB plans. The company can't just get rid of the pension. There are very specific laws in place to prevent this. The only way the DB plan goes away (you can't even negotiated it away for those already vested - it is a vested, court backed benefit) is if the company declares bankruptcy or they liquidate the plan and give out the proceeds - like Delta did. That might not be so bad - as long as the pension fund stays funded you'd probably end up with more money than you would have had you invested it in a 401K by yourself.

So that's it. Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think there's anyway the company can get rid of it - nor can we negotiate it's removal for the vested members in the next contract. Yes, you could cap it, but if I've got 10 years of vested DB benefits, then those can only go away in the two scenarios mentioned above.

Yea... Social Security will be there too. Because congress promised it and the laws can never change.

I don't know how in the world you ever plan for something with the idea that "anything can happen". The entire country could go bankrupt and then your savings would be worthless so why not spend as much as you can now - live for the moment? Or Congress could outlaw CBAs and Fred could force us all at gunpoint to work for free. Oh YEAH, IT COULD HAPPEN! Please don't ever run for anything on the MEC - I definitely don't want your kind of thinking affecting anything of mine but hey good luck with that.
