Not a Bad suggestion, except there aren't very many Weekend layovers, at least not on the MEM MD.

Not true. The only time the union isnt obligated is if they deem a Grievance Review Board is required to deny your request if you want to file it over something ludicrous. (IE: Its not in the contract). For the record, a grievance is in the works on ramp locations who have not complied with our contract. Point is: Talk is cheap. If our complaint is legit and contractural, then file the grievance. It is our call.

That's what we used to do, until they figured out that flights for double D/H's were cheaper than hotels and the extra credit hours.

Yeah. We uhmm...are kinda sorta saying the same thing. The UNION files the grievance, not the individual pilot. And you are right about the review board- If I complained and wanted to file a grievance because the seats in the Airbus are too narrow for my fat [and steadily growing-!] rear-end, then the pilot group would be correct to not officially complain to the company.
