UPS Furlough 2 Week Delay
Thank you to the Executive Board members in SDF yesterday who made this happen:
"Your Executive Board has been working on several issues related to UPS' announced furlough and wants all potential furloughees to know the following information before schedule bid 10-03 closes tomorrow morning, Wednesday 1000 local SDF.
Due to complexity in how to handle numerous issues when furloughing a crewmember in the middle of a pay period UPS has agreed to extend the first date of furlough to the end of pay period 10-02, May 22, 2010. This will be the furlough date for the first 54 crewmembers that have already received official notice of an anticipated furlough date of May 8th.
Your Executive Board continues to discuss several additional outstanding furlough issues with UPS and will communicate any additional information when able."

Mmmm. They're delaying the furloughing of the 3 dispatchers too. I'm beginning to think that there will be no furloughs. Someone in ATL is realizing that it might not be a good idea. (I have nothing to base this thought on but intuition)
That being said, they are doing the same thing to the dispatchers that they did to the pilots (dispatchers are giving up unpaid days off to try to save the three dispatchers)
My theory is they never planned on actually furloughing, so they figured they can make a few bucks from the union folks with this RIF tactic until the volume is back up. Pretty smart if you think about it.

And from my lurking on the FDX threads, it looks like they are exiting the 4a2b thing. Would UPS furlough while FDX is increasing their block hours?

In this case it is a good thing for the employees that our internal software is ancient and outdated. Most of the time it is not in our favor ...
Or there is something more to this than meets the eye. Like the lack of available reserves in ANC on the 400 for this current pay period ...

Just a thought: getting the axe half way through a bid period could penalize those who haven't met their minimum duty credit hour for accruals. This way everyone will get longevity, sick, vacation credit for the last pay period.
The seniority/longevity credit is important during the eventual recall.
My thoughts and prayers go out to everyone involved.

I just don't see this "extension" as anything but a glitch in UPS's system.
Don't take it the wrong way, I see how this is a benefit to the ones let go ... I just think it also happens to be an unintended consequence on UPS's part. Not some gracious gift bestowed upon us by our benevolent employer.
