Default FedEx MD-10 collides with SWA 737 on taxiway

Aircrew Buzz: Taxiway collision at Salt Lake City: Southwest Airlines B737 and FedEx DC-10

No one was hurt and damage wasn't severe. I wonder how many of these we can endure before Lloyd's of London drops us and we have to self ensure. That would be very expensive.

If SWA was pushing back onto an active taxiway I doubt the push crew at SWA still has a job. I'll bet a months pay the taxing AC had the right of
way. I'm sure Herb can pay for the damage to the MD10 if any. Kinda like PeeWee Herman punching Mike Tyson.

Standby for loads of FCIFs on how to taxi properly. One guy $hits his pants, we all get diapers.

Can you actually see a little 737 on the ground from the cockpit of a DC-10?

I talked with someone who was there. This one wont hurt Fedex. The bill is going to be on SWA. Perhaps this will cause them to reconsider wing walkers on pushback.

I was disappointed to hear that we had yet another "incident" but RT's thoughts here make a lot of sense to me. We might actually be able to defend this one ... good job RT!

ATC should have told FDX about the SWA jet if they were in fact pushing onto an active taxiway ..................... check the tapes !!!

We do use wing walkers on pushback. I'm sure there will be blame to go around. ATC should have notified SWA aircraft to give way to taxiing aircraft prior to push. SWA ground crew should have seen the taxiing FEDEX jet and stopped push. FEDEX crew taxiing should have monitored their wing tip clearance as they taxi'd by another aircraft in close vicinity.

I feel for all involved...not a great position to be in. Could've easily been any one of us on another day.

You can't see your wing tips from an MD-10 or MD-11 cockpit.

Not an excuse - just saying, it's not an option to "monitor wing tip clearance", rubber neck and squeak by an obstacle.

the obligation (for both aircraft) is to be on the taxiway/ramp taxi centerline - and then the wingtip clearance is already figured in (especially important for DC-10/MD-10/MD-11 that can't see their own wingtips from the cockpit)

if one aircraft wasn't on the centerline, they will probably be the ones blamed if anyone is blamed.
