Question FDX: Sub vs. Bank

Anyone know if you get subbed do you keep your travel bank. If you turn down the sub I am assuming you lose your travel bank. Is that correct?

If you turn down SUB are you able to get OTP automatically or do you have to ask for OTP in lei of SUB? I've been reading the contract and it is a bit confusing with all the moving between chapter 4 and 25. My trip is over 72 hours TAB and I am positive they will be calling me within the +- 4 hour window prior to show because of all the OT next week. I am thinking about taking OTP and controlling my own destiny instead of taking SUB but I am in the hole for travel bank pretty big if I lose the bank money for the SUB trip. Trying to avoid that.

Thanks

You keep the bank on the original trip that you were Subed (sp) on. Decline Sub and you are immediately available for OTP to the end of the current bid month plus 2 I believe. Positive about the bank money though.

You are correct, at least that was the way it worked for me a few months ago. Specifically, I declined SUB and took OTP plus got to keep the bank... and I spent as much of it as I could... following all rules stated in the contract of course.

Thanks guys! That is great info to know. I will be in better shape then if I keep the bank and pick up a trip on my own using OTP. The reason that I questioned keeping the bank was because I heard a rule of thumb that once you departed on a trip you kept the bank, but wasn't sure about getting SUB when you haven't actually departed.

Thanks again!

Thumbs up 8.c.2.a

2. Deadhead Deviation Banks
a. A pilot shall have a deviation bank established for each bid
period. The value of the deviation bank shall equal the value
of the scheduled deadhead tickets for trips flown during the
bid period plus the value of any scheduled deadheads for
recurrent training. However, if a deadhead trip is changed
or canceled by the Company, the deadhead bank monies
remain intact.

So this must be the sentence that establishes the fact that we keep the bank since the company was the one who cancelled the DH trip by putting the pilot in SUB even if the pilot declines SUB it doesn't change the fact the company was the initial reason the DH trip was changed or cancelled.

Thanks all,

What if I have a non-refundable ticket? I declined SUB, took OTP. Plan on no showing for the ticket, (to avoid additional change penalties). Can I apply that ticket towards the bank even if I didn't fly on the flight?

Here is one consideration you might not be aware of if you turn down sub. You have 60 days to make up the trip guarantee and if your OTP trip is less than your original trip instead of over the value, YOU WILL NOT BE PAID FOR THE OTP TRIP OR TRIPS UNTIL THE END OF THE 60 DAYS!!!!! THE NEXT PAY PERIOD (15TH) AFTER YOU DECLINE THE SUB TRIP, CREW PAY WILL DEDUCT THE ENTIRE VALUE OF THE ORIGINAL TRIP FROM YOUR PAY AND AFTER 60 DAYS, YOU WILL THEN GET PAID FOR WHAT YOU FLY IN OTP. I HAD A SINGLE DEPARTURE INTERNATIONAL TRIP CANCELLED, DECLINED SUB, THE 15TH OF THE NEXT MONTH, GOT NO PAYCHECK BECAUSE THEY TOOK BACK THE ENTIRE TRIP GUARANTEE, OUCH!!!! GOT PAID FOR MY OTP TRIP AFTER 60 DAYS SINCE MY OTP TRIP WAS A COUPLE HOURS SHORT OF MY SUB GUARANTEE. YOU WONT FIND THAT IN THE CONTRACT BUT THAT IS THE WAY CREW PAY WORKS IT SO BE AWARE TURNING DOWN SUB FOR A LONG TRIP CAN HURT IN THE SHORT TERM

On a related note, what is the max OTP trip you can bid on? Is it subbed (Original) trip CH + 6CH? Can't find it in the contract. For example, if subbed on a 6 hour trip, can I bid a 20 hour trip as PMU? (6 CH's at 125%, 14 CH at 100%) or would I be limited to some other arbitrary number? Effin substitution.....

25.L.4.d. He is not eligible for a PMU assignment that exceeds his OTP eligibility by more than 6 CH

4.N.3. CH for trips assigned in OTP status shall be compensated at 125% of the pilot's normal pay rate, except that CH earned for trips assigned in OTP status, which exceed the pilot's OTP eligibility shall be compensated at 100%.

There must not be a standardized system within Crew Pay. I have always declined Sub and have done so on numerous occasions. My pay has always been the same in the the following way:
1. Decline Sub and receive the pay guarantee in the current month.
2. Pay Summary on second month after declining Sub shows trip guarantee removal.
3. Trip Guarantee from original trip removed on the 15th on the month pay check after the OTP was due to expire (third month).
4. Any OTP flown after declining Sub was paid on the 15th of next month.

I always look at my pay summary immediately after declining Sub. The current month will show the guarantee for the trip. Two months out, your pay summary will show a negative CH value where the trip guarantee was removed. This will help out huge to prevent screwing up the family budget with a $0 pay check when your not expecting it.
